Took a ride in one of those Indian made tuk tuk's in The Penh the other day for the first time. Nice ride. The thing that struck me though was the lack of space in them. I looked in front and i looked behind the seat, but couldn't for the life of me see how more space could be made available for a khmer family of 12.
My girlfriend and i were at the beach the other day and watched 15 people getting off the old style tuk tuk's one by one. I shit you not.
Fark, it was impressive.
Are they filling a niche or sumting, or just more mobile?

They are only designed for 2-3 passengers. They are way cheaper than the old tuk-tuks and you can get one to come and pick you up and drop you off without giving directions most of the time.

Seriously overpriced at $3600. The poor drivers need to work for a few years just to pay them off, as apposed to a $600 traditional TukTuk trailer.
I’ve not met one yet who can actually use the gears and clutch properly.

I thought they were $2600 new. Drivers can earn a decent amount if they put in the hours. I’ve one Tuktuk driver friend who paid his off within ten months.YaTingPom wrote:Seriously overpriced at $3600. Those shitty little things run on LPG...cleaner for the environment and almost a quarter of the cost to run. I happily pay more for tuktuks most of the time, because I feel marginally safer in a tuk tuk and I like my tuk tuk driver

Incidentally, if you like the convenience of an app and not having to negotiate prices, several apps now offer regular Tuktuk as well as the LPG tuktuks. They are obviously a little bit more expensive though.violet wrote:Those shitty little things run on LPG...cleaner for the environment and almost a quarter of the cost to run. You might want to count in the price of the motorcycle pulling the cart too.... No way the combi sells for 600 USD.YaTingPom wrote:Seriously overpriced at $3600. The poor drivers need to work for a few years just to pay them off, as apposed to a $600 traditional TukTuk trailer.

And no need to break up with your tuktuk driver because you ordered him with an app. Unlike when you have a regular:ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:Incidentally, if you like the convenience of an app and not having to negotiate prices, several apps now offer regular Tuktuk as well as the LPG tuktuks.

4. He asks questions about how much things I buy cost and how much rent I am paying.
5. He knows where I am going to move to (he drove me there). It is in another area and he has already said he can still be my regular driver.
He, or one of the other regulars will be driving me to my new home.

I think they run on LPG and gas. Not sure of the LPG filling station avalilability situation, especially outside PP.
Also, although they are cheaper to run on LPG they are not as efficient per liter than petrol. Petrol is more calorific versus LPG/CNG per liter so they are not as cheap as they seem.

All the Indian tuk tuk's i saw had a smartphone mounted in the front using some map app, and i noticed some bidding system. A couple of them had 2 phones mounted in a DIY cardboard dash.
I guess that's hard to do with a regular tuk tuk in the rain.

You’re also comparing a crappy second hand Tuktuk carriage (without a motorbike) with a brand new all-in-one LPG tuktuk. If you are buying a new Tuktuk carriage and a newish motorbike to tow it, would you have much change from $2k
I chatted with my Tuktuk mucker this am. He didn’t buy his new, it was 2 months old and he bought it for $2,600 - that was 4 months ago. It looks like new though.
This was his second one, the first one he bought a year ago for $2000, used it for a year, paid it off and sold it for $1,800. He’s a bit of a Delboy.
I expect the fact that they are lighter & greater manoeuvrability leading to better speed through traffic will more than offset the lower calorific value. They are also quite good fun to drive - you should ask for a go on one.
If the market is there petrol stations will invest in a LPG filling station, they are fairly easy to add.YaTingPom wrote:$3550 now.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:I thought they were $2600 new. Has anyone ever made a LPG conversion kit for a Daelim I wonder?
