When I was at the Koh Kong border (travelled from Trat) about than two months ago, I was really annoyed when the guy at the immigration counter demanded 100 baht from me. I was limping from a sprained ankle from part of of my journey in Phuket, and was really on a really tight budget, after losing my job. It was quite a scary experience as I was wondering what would happen to me if I refused to pay the unnecessary extra fee imposed on me.

They sometimes make those who will not pay extra wait until the border is closing. Of course at that point your transport options have diminished, prices have gone up and you will end up staying in KK until the following morning unless you want to pay the last taxi a hundred bucks to go to Snooky or PP.

That said, if you are so poor you cannot afford the occasional 3 dollar bribe then you may want to reassess you travel plans!

I am not making a big deal out of the 3 dollars but this kind of extortation did put me off crossing the border forever.
I don't mind giving out a dollar here and there but one should at least be informed at the entrance of the border with regard this socalled "requirement" to pay the extra $3. I don't see the point of ending up as one of their random victim just because one happen to be "rich" or happen to to be able to scrimp up some money to experience traveling via this border. I also don't see the point of us end up poorer just because one is intimidated to pay for that kind of service. Furthermore it took quite a long time for my passport to be stamped even though i was the only one at the queue. Perhaps, it would be better to avoid going to this border if it continues to make unexpected demand for extra money. It was such a tedious and scary experience crossing this type of border.
Regardless, whether we are rich or not, we are merely travelers and not there to be bullied by their Asian communities into further enriching them In such a manner..
