Shit, harmless species killed out of ignorance. Maybe when bugs, rats etc. start multiplying by the thousands they may ask why. That's a joke, cause and effect are anathema.

Yup, I’m told that snake was turned into dinner. Apparently they were on edge after the king cobra they saw the week before got away.
As more and more jungle on the island is getting cut and burned away, I feel more snakes will need to find their way nearer to humans.

Cobra poison is not only necrotic. in fact very few snake shave only one type of poison.
Neurotoxic, haemotoxic, cytotoxic etc, usually a combination
Neuro shits down your nerves, paralyses your chest muscles, die of asphyxiation. Usually elapids, cobras, mambas, kraits etc. have the highest percentage, Be very wary if some quack wants to discharge you when you seem well, relapses are common after a few hours/ a day of big improvement
Factoid: research is being done on mamba venom wrt pain relief, as apparently you may asphyxiate and die, but the last stages are painless. Cold comfort.
Haemo causes you to bleed from everywhere by shutting down coagulants in your body, highets percentage in colubrids (back-fanged) snakes, boomslang, vine snake etc. No antivenom for vine snake, limited for boomslang, most bite sdealt with on a treat symptoms basis.
Cyto destroys tissue and is usually the longest lasting effect of any bite, long after you are out of danger. Many elapids and vipers have some percentage of this.
There are a variety of standards for measuring most venomous snake, top spot usually goes to Eastern tiger snake and Island tiger(Australian island)
But the snake you least want to be close to is a black mamba, fastest, aggressive if cornered, huge amount of deadly venom, strikes after raising 2/3 of it's body off the ground, so chest/face bites can happen with a large specimen. Not much anyone can do if that happens, hour/couple of hours you're history.
Avoid them, don't try to kill them.

out of curiosity. in case you are lucky enough to be near Phnom Penh when you or someone around you gets bitten, where do you go for treatment/antivenom?I supposed it is a good idea to take a picture or kill the culprit (easier said than done?) in case you are bitten so the doctor you go to knows what they are dealing with?

There isn't any anti-venom in Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia for the red-knecked keelbacks because I've tried to get some. It is available in Japan though.
I have many of these in my lush tropical garden and in the surrounding rice paddies. Luckily, they are mostly juveniles and don't appear to be very aggressive but the cats like to play with them and bring them inside!
Edited to add this website about snakes that helped me identify the red-knecked keelback.

There's some good comments from people's experiences in Cambodia and Thailand etc with them.

It's definitely a good idea to identify the snake. However, many people get bitten again trying to kill the snake, a picture would be a good idea, but bear in mind we have spitting cobras here, too, and trust me, you do not want venom in your eyes, nasty experience.aem wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2019 2:37 pmout of curiosity. in case you are lucky enough to be near Phnom Penh when you or someone around you gets bitten, where do you go for treatment/antivenom?I supposed it is a good idea to take a picture or kill the culprit (easier said than done?) in case you are bitten so the doctor you go to knows what they are dealing with?
I'm not sure if there are any phone apps for identifying snakes in SE Asia (several for US/S. America, Africa)...better hospitals have charts with pictures of the most common/ deadly species.

It’s funny to see how boring Alexandra has become as a poster and Miguelito getting feistier.
