VPNs in Cambodia
VPNs in Cambodia
Now before I ask this question, please keep in mind that while I'm somewhat tech savvy, I was only introduced to the concept of VPNs when I first moved to China. That being said, I am still a resident of China. I use Astrill VPN and it's worked great for me for nearly 8 years and I'm quite happy with it. The only reason I use a VPN in China is due to the extreme censorship. The Great Firewall of China blocks whatever it can get it's hands on and any foreigner in China would need a VPN to maintain some semblance of a normal life. According to what I've read, Cambodia has no internet censorship. There is some limited monitoring of the internet to make sure people aren't bad mouthing the government, plotting, or something, but no direct blocking of sites. That being said, should I continue to pay for my VPN or is it now unnecessary? I have read a lot of foreigners in Cambodia continue to use a VPN, but what I don't understand is why? I mean if the internet isn't blocked, then why do you need a VPN?

When NOT using a VPN from within Cambodia regularly, gives you a "flag" on the IP number being used. For example, gmail sometimes chokes up, some forums (not K440, but that's that old software, that it does not have exotic IP protections).
When things seem to be difficult, I turn on the VPN.
A second item to do the VPN is, that your VPN goes through a fixed "path" to a location with some better Internet connection. That can work out positive as well as negative, though. If you are lucky, you get a better connection, if not, OK, just switch of the VPN.
For censorship, I do experience Malaysia to be by far the worst. Whenever they do expect a VPN (alike) connection, they start to block that and even try to penetrate your PC (good luck to do so on a hardened Linux, though the idea). I have to say, the China I do come is nowadays only HK, so it might be as bad or even worse as Malaysia.
