Going to Phnom Penh to teach! I need advice!
Hello, my name is Lui
I am from the uk and my girlfriend is south african, we have both been teaching in china For the past year and decided we wanted to move on to another country such as cambodia.
We have Tefl certificates and reference letters from the training school we worked at in Beijing, I worked at an international school there teaching older children also but we don't have degrees, I have a Foundation diploma in english language studies from Northumbria university but we are both hard-working passionate teachers who aren't afraid of big classes or tough work.
So...
We are buying flights soon, getting a visa on arrival in Phnom Pehn, hopefully renting an apartment after we have found a job scouting around from school to school handing out CV's while living in a hotel.
I'm hoping that we will have an opportunity to display our skills to employers but to be honest, I'm not sure what to expect, I found things to be lacking professionalism in china a lot and I worked a few jobs there.
We just want to live a Happy legal life and do well for ourselves, we don't really care how long it takes as the conditions in south Africa are getting out of control and I don't want my girl there any longer.
Please, any advice would be very much appreciated,
Thank you
Before you start a teaching job, maybe live for a month in PP and find out, if you like it. Some people don't like the town/country at all. If your GF has a dark skin, she may have problems with how she is treated.
With TEFL papers, it's not that difficult to get a job, though salary will be low.
Take care to obtain a Business visa (Ordinary type), otherwise you have to leave the country to extend for more than an additional 30 days.
If you are capable to teach Dyslectic children, English reading/writing, let me know. I might be interested to hire you (or maybe your GF) for 2 of my kids (7+11). Toul Kork area.

Hey, thanks for the input and sorry for the delay in reply, we are both white, I'm 29 and she's 23, I believe we can teach dyslexic children and we are definitely coming to Phnom Penh within 2 weeks or just over, I was once diagnosed as being dyslexic so I know the struggle, guided reading and writing practices will help especially if we have some one to one time or one on two, can you tell me a bit more about the school and area? My email address is [email protected]

You are dyslexic and can't seem to write a meaningful sentence without run-ons, can't imagine you'll have any problem. JFC.

Haha sorry, I wrote how I talk because this is in an informal forum but if you like I can talk in full punctuated sentences. I am a Geordie from newcastle in the UK and we talk with unfinished sentences supposing the other can understand the gist of the point of what I'm talking about, we talk very fast too and this may explain my hurried thought processes, I do apologise in advance. I am also unpacking a house full of boxes at the moment and may be a little distracted but be assured my professionalism reaches further than my colloquial tongue.

But very professional guys, Horace? Lucky lucan? I can take a joke but my goodness, so unhelpful, you guys must lead interesting lives for you to spend your time slandering some one you hardly know, real credit to humanity... big keyboard warriors, no applause I'm appalled, that's all I have to say to comments like these

I have no interest in teaching English, but I know how to construct a sentence. You are asking about teaching English, and don't seem to know how to write properly. So this would be a concern, if you don't understand a subject well you should not be teaching it. This country has had enough of the "I been teach Englees 2 years already now" bollocks, and that's a quote from a twenty year old book. Go away and stop wasting student's time and money on your mangled language.

How did I slander you? Hardly know you? I don't know you at all!
I pointed out something that you should think about. You never know who reads this forum and whether there may be a Director of Studies or a Department Head reading who needs to employ more teachers, and for that reason when inquiring about teaching work one needs to present themselves better, even if it is an informal forum.

Wow, you guys really ride some high horses, well I'm happy that you aren't a director or department head but that reputation proceeded you with the nonsense you both spout, yes slander- the action of making a false statement, who are you to say that my comments were incorrect for an informal forum? Do you govern the standards informal chats should be met with? Was I asking for a teaching position in your school? I think not, I'm not trying to impress you, I was trying to get some positive advice from people other than the likes of you two.
Mangled language... Oh my goodness, having an accent that encompasses different speech styles, especially one like mine that integrates different varieties of northern and southern England is actually known as a more complex variety of English and if you can code switch then it's even more valuable to have. Mangled okay, fair enough, there's some truth in that to the untrained and those without imagination.
Now you both sound intelligible enough to understand my aim and the type of information I was seeking from this post but instead you post comments that are of the caliber odious trolls would use, unhelpful, offensive and just plain disappointing when I was seeking useful advice, not idiotic comments on how I should write my letter of application. I was actually quite shocked at the absurdity of your messages and frankly, a little embarrassed for you both, I hope nobody needs your advice in the future as I'm sure you would further complicate their lives with your nonsense, yes I know your not teachers, that notion was abundantly clear as your actions are laughable and I'm only really replying to you to tell you that you need to go back to school.

"...I know your not teachers..." Um, 'your' is a possessive. You're is a contraction. Shake my head. Poor. Very poor.
Jesus, how many of you are there? Is it contageous?Mephistophi Lui wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:54 pmI am a Geordie from newcastle in the UK and we talk with unfinished sentences supposing the other can understand the gist of the point of what I'm talking about
Isn't saying "I am a Geordie from newcastle in the UK" a bit like saying "I'm a Londoner from London"? Where else would a Geordie be from?Mephistophi Lui wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:54 pmI am a Geordie from newcastle in the UK and we talk with unfinished sentences supposing the other can understand the gist of the point of what I'm talking about, we talk very fast too and this may explain my hurried thought processes, I do apologise in advance. These are traits I look for in teachers of my children.Mephistophi Lui wrote: ↑Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:54 pmwe talk with unfinished sentences supposing the other can understand the gist of the point of what I'm talking about, we talk very fast too and this may explain my hurried thought processes
