Driving Licence Renewal. Eye Test Required?
Driving Licence Renewal. Eye Test Required?
So I can see perfectly well, no spectacles required, but my right eye is crap. Was born that way, same as my father and his father before him.
When I got the previous licence I used a cunning ruse and cheated but if that didn't work there is no way I could pass the individual eye test.
Is it required for renewal?
Thanks.

I used Lucky Lucky to renew my license, no test required. It was also a couple of weeks expired, no trouble on that either.

Yes, it's required but it's a joke.
Went there last week at 6:30 pm: one guy was watching youtube on computer the others were behind eating and drink, speaking loudly as if there was a birthday party or something. After waiting there for a couple of minutes the guy on youtube showed me a sign that reads: dinner time 6-7 pm. After a while noticed another sign on a desk: lunch time 11-12 am.
I came back at 7pm, the bunch who were making all that noise at back office were now at front. Still eating, drinking and chatting very loudly. 3 girls and one guy.
Another guy arrived and sat behind another computer, The first one was still watching youtube. He asked for my passport and current license, filled in some paper and asked me to photocopy the whole thing by indicating a desk behind me where another guy just arrived, sat and started yet another computer attached to a scanner. He asked 1000 riel for that and then disappeared at back office.
I brought back the copies to the first guy, just opposite, he stamped some papers, gave me another one and said: please have your picture taken behind that wall and then have the eye test.
Behind the wall there was a camera on tripod and 2 disgusting combs: they were born white but were black, full of dirt. A guy showed, asked to face the camera, snapped and left.
The guy who was on youtube appeared and asked me to stand at certain distance and read the numbers on a board. With both eyes open and once with each one blinded. I proudly succeeded my test, paid 10.000 riel and went back to the guy who was checking all check boxes on his computer. He checked my license again and said: please pay at the desk behind you and note that the new price is $30 instead of $7.50. I asked him whether Khmer pay that price also and he said: no, Khmer still pay $7.50
I took all those papers and gave them to the girl sitting now next to the photocopy desk. She was not there before and just magically appeared there out of nowhere. I gave her $30 but she said: you have to add 2000 riel for the payment service called "blablaPAY" (there was a sticker with this brand on her desk). There was an electronic ticket coming out of a small machine.
I then brought the whole package to the first guy who printed my license and gave me back all tickets: 122.000 riel for the license, 1000 riel for the photocopy and 10.000 riel for the test.
The other 3 girls + 1 guy were still at front desk eating, drinking and speaking loudly.
Time was 7:30 pm.

Proudly sent from my Gameboy by Super Mario using Kakaplok.
$30! That’s a hike! Plus they’ve stopped issuing 10 year to Chinese. $$$$$$$
My $400 10 year seems like a bargain now, especially when I don’t live in PP.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
Was that recently?
How do they do that then. I thought you had to go to Aeon 2 in person?
How much? (Asking for a friend)
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Thanks.dsl25 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2020 10:40 pmYes, it's required but it's a joke.

That's pretty much what I went through last time, because I lost my old licence.
All this was just to renew a Cambodian one, right?
Think I'll try the Spigzy route as I don't think my cunning ruse for the eye test will work again.
Yes, two weeks ago - I also was a bit cheeky that I don't have a big bike license on my UK license, but since the UK ones followed EU standards they put a comment against bikes of 79(3) which is actually for trikes only. The woman at Lucky Lucky asked if I wanted the Khmer B license (125cc+) as my old one was just an A license for a car, but I pulled up on a big bike. At Aeon2 they knew exactly what that was somehow, and wouldn't do it - but at Lucky Lucky a week later and $150 poorer, I got the renewal plus the B license without having to ride a 300kg cruiser around that stupid circuit designed for Honda Chalys! No questions asked. You'll need your passport also.
Possibly steep for what it is for the year, but I'm a "time is money" type of person, and saving hours at Aeon or days at that stupid licensing place it was well worth removing the hassle.

I guess $150 for a cat B is pretty good value.

Cambodia ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world yet seems to be of the most expensive to get a drivers license.
( i can only compare it to CA USA $30 for 5 years, Thailand $16 for 5 years,)
I wonder what % of khmer's hold one

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
It all depends on circumstance- if I were staying here another 10 years I’d agree; do the test and pay the $450. If you’re here just for a couple more years, then save yourself the hassle of the MPWT morons at Aeon 2/ test centre plus the hours wasted and spunk out for $150 each year.
