During lockdown, there were around 8 or 9 of them + a baby sleeping on riverside trees each night for the last 2 weeks (maybe more), just in front of the old Renakse Hotel.
Always beautiful to see them flying with their majestic wings.

I think this is amazing. 25 years ago there were no birds or it seemed like it in PP, just pigeons.
The first and only place I have seen hornbills in the open was west coast Malaysia and the islands.
Saw an eagle flying around the mountains yesterday or the day before. That was cool.

k440, something to do when you're pissed.
Saw a gibbon swinging down the wires in tuol tum pung recently. Didn't see that 25 years ago.
Seems likely that the hornbills escaped or were released, bit who knows. Plenty of food for themv in the city, with old for trees and pidgeon squibs.

The Hornbills and Gibbons are/ were owned by a tycoon who has a big compound near Russian Hospital. He has some flamingos on his mini golf course, one escaped a while back and he was offering $1K if someone found it. They were allowed to roam. The Hornbills seem to have spread out (and maybe started nesting near Wat Phnom ?), it's great to see them around but it's not like it's some wildlife miracle.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Hanno taught me there are two types in these photos. The big colourful ones, which can't breed without huge trees and the smaller mostly black and white ones, Oriental pied hornbills, which do seem to be breeding. That kind of is a miracle in the city.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 8:49 pmThe Hornbills and Gibbons are/ were owned by a tycoon who has a big compound near Russian Hospital.
