Is metal/treasure/gold detecting a thing in Cambodia?

There was a guy in SHV who did it (German I think) and he was “re-educated” by the cops.

Interesting topic, myself and a mate were discussing this a few months ago,
My wifes rich uncle buried gold, was killed by the KR during that time

There is surely more than landmines to be detected.

There are many family stories of buried gold in Cambodia. Most probably just old tales for the most part. But there are for sure millions of explody things buried all over the country. Also you'd probably have trouble the authorities as laws on antiquities is quite strict (in theory)

For many years I lived in a brilliant, big old villa. Rumour was, that the house on the other side of my direct neighbour was built with gold they found under my fence. People had also broken concrete beneath my stairs looking for gold.

We rented the building I worked in from the government, and it was inside a big government compound. One Monday I show up for work and see some soldiers and a backhoe digging through the parking lot pavement, working on the 3rd big hole. They said the gold stash was a well known story, but their commander had been shown the exact location in a dream. Not exact enough I guess.

I am sure there would be a lot of gold and jewellery buried, especially around Phnom Penh. I remember going to the black bamboo palace building on Bokor where there were rooms for concubines. There were holes smashed in the concrete floors. Looters looking for valuables for sure
