Is there anyone who still lives there who can fill me in?
It can't all be appalling. Surely long walks along the beach are still possible.
How much is a modest apartment with a balcony with ocean view? And err, sorry, but preferably in a building not filled with the Chinese brothers. I know there's one owned by a French gentleman and another by some Russians.
Thanks.
Life in Sihanoukville
Yes.
I'm curious about prices, but also about nice, yet less expensive rental locations. Do they still exist?
I passed through a couple times enroute to the islands maybe 4 years ago, but the last time I stayed near town was 2011.
Also, back in the day, you could sometimes find a small khmer house to rent for a week. As I'd probably be travelling with a family, maybe even an extended family of 8-15 people, getting a house and cooking 2/3 of our meals would be more fun and much cheaper. Do Khmer's still do this, or are they days of single family dwellings for regular Cambodians long gone?
If this is something Cambodians in Sihanoukville no longer do, what about expats? Anyone have a place there they would let out, perhaps for cash, or in trade for a place to visit elsewhere in the country?

I’m here now. Just had a nice drive through town - I actually like what they’re doing with the road from Ochenteal through Otres. Protected the beach itself and putting in a nice boardwalk. I’m sure the French gentlemen will be along shortly to fill in on prices.RobW wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 10:40 amIs there anyone who still lives there who can fill me in?

Still good views around, Angkor is still fresh, and still good seafood (had the best crab I’ve had for ages).
Thank you Miguelito.
The French gentleman and I were briefly acquainted in the days of Pon's place.
I would very much appreciate his input.

While like many we had to move back to PP our SHV tenants are of many nationalities but Chinese.
Regarding rental prices 370$ get you a 1 bedroom with balcony and around 700 a much bigger 2 bedrooms, both with housekeeping, secure parking and attentive management.

When I was there a month or so back, the only nice place I remember being in was this gated community on a wooded hill where one of my friend's relations had just opened a restaurant. Unfortunately I felt sick as a pig that evening and managed to puke half way across the street and behind our car. I wasn't even drunk, I think it was swimming in the sea at Otres that made me ill. The center city is so fucking terrible that I won't even go into it. Aleppo sur le Mer. There must be some ok areas but I didn't see too many. Kampot is full of yoga spiritualist bongo players and likely boring as hell, but it has pretty buildings. Kep is even more boring but at least there's some beautiful jungle around.RobW wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 10:40 amIs there anyone who still lives there who can fill me in?

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The real value in Sihanoukville was the same as Golden Sorya, enjoying a cold beer while being entertained by the antics of the druggies, whores & other degenerates. Sitting on the beach with some muk and beers had potential but was a bother due to the barrage of sellers. I did enjoy Olive Olive, Harpers and boat trips to the islands. I bypassed the whole mainland and did a straight PP to island by helicopter, that would be best as long as I wasn't paying.
Kep was the best of those 3, and only 25 minutes from Kampot for more activity. I suppose if I wasn't happy with a 6 pack of beer and being home I would have been more interested in the old SHV.
Now that it is packed with Chinese gangsters it is even worse, what reason is there to consider SHV over Kep or Kampot?

My boy was going to move down for a good job opportunity but he has been offered equal here so we aren't going.
Still miss the place though.
What! The Chinese are corralling all the barangs left in Sihanoukville into one building? What are they up to?
It reminds me of that Hezbollah leader (or was it Vladimir) who said that he hoped all the Jews in the world gathered in Israel so that he didn't have travel around the globe hunting them down.
