How to get cambodian birth certificate?
How to get cambodian birth certificate?
I am UK national from birth, and my girlfriend is Khmer. We are currently in cambodia, where she recently gave birth to our son in khampong cham.
therefore my question is: how do i obtain a cambodian birth certificate for our son?? i believe we have 30 days from birth, before it gets complicated.
Sorry if this has been asked many times, but im newbie on this forum.
thx in advance.

Go to your child’s Sangkat where the child was born. You’ll need partners family book (her own or parents), Carnet de residence for baby (you’ll need help from your landlord), and birth registration document from the hospital/clinic, plus cash.
Alternatively go to your partners Sangkat, as she or her family will no doubt know the chief, and get them to do the Carnet and official birth certificate. Much easier and they’ll be born in mums province!
Make sure the spelling are correct. They are notoriously bad. Also, don’t take any crap when they say barang can’t be added on certificate. That’s crap.
Congrats.

Good advice about the spelling
Get a spare copy of the birth certificate and fill it out exactly the way you want it. And make sure they get the order of your name correct also ( first / middle / last name etc ) . this can go pear shaped later when they get it wrong and your own country wont accept the certificate when you apply for the kids citizenship. trust me....i been there.....
check / double check / triple check. one small letter out and you are fucked,.....

ermmm, i've just noticed my ABA debit card has my surname, then first name, in that order. I presume thats the wrong order?
thx for all the replies.
Yes, apply for the official birth cert within 30 days of birth as per the above replies. You will also need a copy of your passport in addition to the mothers documents. There is no official fee, but you will no doubt be asked for some tea money.
There is NO legal requirement for the parents to be married for the foreign fathers name to be included on the birth cert, many foreigners have trouble with this due to the Sangkat Chief and/or administrator not having a bloody clue, or just pushing for additional tea money. If the Sangkat refuse to put the foreign fathers name on for any reason, you can first try to show them a print out of the relevant section of the Law on Marriage & Family, failing that go to the Department of Identification and they will intervene and instruct the Sangkat accordingly.
Additionally...use a professional translator to get a translation once the official birth cert is issued...any errors then go back to the Sangkat to have rectified, rinse and repeat as many times as necessary.

I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
One of my son's had a Khmer birth certificate with a very minor error. We had it corrected just before applying for his first passport and a long planned trip. All seemed good until, with time running out, I saw the corrected birth certificate left off a middle name and thus made my son's name completely identical to my father. No time to change docs, so identical in Cambodia and my home country.
As part of a retirement gift, my father got a lifetime Gym membership. Though my father has now passed, but we still use his gym membership under my son's name. It's a big place and the staff think it is funny.

No, that’s the correct way for any official docs. Family name, middle then first. That’s why Cambodians always call you “Mr Dave” or “Mr Steve” etc.

They did that to me at one of the Toul Tom Poung Sangkats when I tried to get the birth certificate for my son, they said they can't do it since we aren't married. Obvious nonsense, so many kids are here without married parents.PSD_Kiwi wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:53 amThere is NO legal requirement for the parents to be married for the foreign fathers name to be included on the birth cert, many foreigners have trouble with this due to the Sangkat Chief and/or administrator not having a bloody clue, or just pushing for additional tea money. Not that it will help the OP but we ended up getting it done at a different Sangkat where the person inside was an associate.

If the Sangkat refuses you can contact the General Department of Identification and request assistance.
I would say the official procedure would be to get a blood test first
Yeah this was where it can go to shit on the forms....PSD_Kiwi wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 8:20 pmSurname - First Name - Middle NameYaTingPom wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 7:40 pmNo, that’s the correct way for any official docs. If you look where you name the kid it on the khmer form ( and translated has seperate boxes / sections for FAMILY NAME and then GIVEN NAMES
When you get to the parent names section it just has one box for FAMILY AND GIVEN NAMES . Khmers can get this all over the place. In the end we got a cert that had my name listed in the ox as FIRST MIDDLE MIDDLE LAST and this was accepted by Aussie Embassy. I think the initial mistkae from memory was the khmers listed my name as MIDDLE MIDDLE LAST FIRST
