Importing a car
Importing a car
Has anyone here imported their car to Cambodia? I'd be interested to know how it went. I understand that the import duties are high but how is that calculated on a used car?

Value determined by number of factors.
Purchase Price of Car
Or
Value determined by Custims Bible - engine size, model, year and their determined Value.
Whichever is greater

Don't bother, if it is that special to you, you absolutely do not want to be driving it in this country.

Nothing wrong with driving here, but you have to expect some idiot to dent, scratch, or even take the mirrors off your car at some point- if not worse. Better to buy a car here that you don’t have such a connection with & can repair easily. (Toyota, Lexus, etc)
Maybe just me as I’ve got an old Porsche 928 in storage back in the UK, but I would not think of importing it here as much as I love to drive that car. The tax would be absurd, steering wheel on the wrong side, the roads less than ideal, and that’s before Samnang gives you a “sorry bong!!” grin as his Honda Dream handle bar put a new go faster stripe along the side!

Can’t import RHD anymore, but I get what you’re laying down.

Life’s too short to worry that someone might scratch your car, and they’re pretty good at fixing them. Roads in town are pretty good, could drive your Porsche here for sure! (Except the RHD thing..)Spigzy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 05, 2021 12:34 pmNothing wrong with driving here, but you have to expect some idiot to dent, scratch, or even take the mirrors off your car at some point- if not worse. All depends on the car I guess, I mean mine is concourse/exhibition condition, so no way is that ever coming here
But even if it was a Range Rover, or a Ford Raptor, Toyota Corolla, etc - better just to buy here in my opinion. The import duty is bonkers, you'd have to have a really special car to want to go through all that red tape & money, and my point is if the car is all that, then you probably wouldn't want to bring it. The guys driving around town in Lambo's are willing to drive those into the ground, quite literally in the potholes/speedbump/car park designs here, and all good for them - money to burn. But for an expat to import a car, I just can't see it.
Has anyone brought a car here & was it worth it - keen to hear some reasoning why picking up a car from a dealer here, or 2nd hand banger wasn't a better option.

I almost imported 2 cars about 3 years ago, a 2012 ML (Mercedes) and a small Toyota Aygo about 5 years old. They were in a container in Antwerp ready to be loaded on a ship. Then my Cambodian guy informed me about the updated import duties that had just jumped 50% or something.
With those new rates I would have had to pay 20k for the Merc and about 10k for the Toyota, which was about twice their residual value here. I managed to pull them off the boat at the last minute and got them back. The whole thing cost me 2k, but there was no way I was ready to pay 30K to those fuckers.

Good luck finding parts for either especially the ML, which all have to imported.
Never seen an Aygo here.

Don't stress it. They'll scavenge some parts from a 90's Camry write-off and make them fit.
It's all good in the hood bong.

What happens if you drive across the border. Coming over land from Europe. Is it cheaper or the same price once you're in the country?
Had a few Toyotas over the years, very reliable and good resale value, if a little dull to drive. Certainly did not get “the feeling” that they promote.Spigzy wrote: ↑Mon Jul 05, 2021 4:54 pmAll depends on the car I guess, I mean mine is concourse/exhibition condition, so no way is that ever coming here

New ford/Hyundai mini suvs good value new and nice to drive, but poor resale.
Thai made Pickups not bad for value and resale. Very economical too
