Eve teasing, a popular pasttime in India, but not what you think it is.
New Delhi : July 13, 2012 : In a bold and therefore uncharacteristic move, the Indian Government has decided to act against the nuisance of rape and eve teasing allegedly pervading the country.
Briefing reporters after a 15-minute long cabinet meeting in New Delhi last evening, of which 3 minutes were spent watching a tantalizing new cellphone video from Guwahati, Assam, the Home Minister P. Chidambaram declared his ministry’s intention of re-prioritizing its key focus areas. He maintained that saving Ajmal Kasab from the gallows and pushing Maoists into police encounters will continue to be the top priorities of the Home ministry. However, reasonably stern and somewhat timely action against attacks on women will now move up in his ministry’s list of priorities from the 49th spot to the 35th, its biggest leap since women were deemed to be more or less equal citizens.
On being asked by reporters if the Home Minister had watched the Guwahati video of a highly intoxicated and depraved woman, unquestioningly of loose moral character, being bothered by a few dozen seemingly harmless men, Mr. Chidambaram admitted that he had. He added that the best way for the country to effectively deal with such issues was by moving women’s safety up the priority ladder of his ministry. “That, already, is half the battle won. We feel it is now almost as big a problem as open manholes in the country, which, as you know, is already priority number 34,” the minister asserted.
Among the slew of new measures announced, experts feel that the most important one is the complete ban on the police force to deal with women related issues. From now on, female citizens will have to wholly rely on their own cellphone videos to corroborate instances of rape, eve teasing or any other forms of general harassment. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the ease with which MMS and Youtube videos related to female harassment become the nation’s main talking point over tea breaks and news channel panel discussions.
“Justice can only be served through evidence. Everyone has a cellphone in this country. If you are facing a problem of harassment, record the activity on your cellphone. Or you can even ask one of the hangers-on to stop being a mute spectator and film the proceedings instead,” the Home Minister advised.
It is expected that women all across the country will react to the news with a sense of joy and relief. Some government agencies have already thrown their support behind the new decision. “This is a remarkable solution to women’s problems. It is difficult to always rely on the police – after all they have to look after so many things, like VIP movements etc. But with cellphones, I am relieved that now when a woman is getting raped, she can record it on her BlackBerry and then SMS it directly to the Supreme Court,” said Chatur Gobardhan, who heads the National Human Rights Commission, Women’s Chapter.
In a separate statement, Education Minister Kapil Sibal also welcomed the Home Ministry’s initiative. “Whatever people feel about Shri A.Raja, I think his contributions to the cause of women’s safety is exceptional”, Mr Sibal said in his statement. “He made cellphones accessible to the poor and downtrodden. You can’t even put a value to that”, he said.
In a remarkable instance of solidarity, the main opposition party the BJP has also lent its support to the government. Spokesman Brijinder Singh Yadav said, ”All women should carry 2 things – a cell phone and some pepper spray. Once home, they can even use the pepper spray in cooking nice dishes for their husbands”, Mr Yadav added, leading to appreciative applause from his audience of party workers.
Meanwhile, it has been learned from reliable sources that news channels in the country have privately vowed to show all such MMS and Youtube videos in graphic detail repeatedly until they have been viewed by the entire country at least a few dozen times. “Some decisions are not based on TRP, only on doing the right thing for society,” a well known journalist and Managing Director of a leading news channel said on condition of anonymity. “Rest assured, wherever there is a rape, we will be there to film it”, he signed off on a positive note.
And here a somewhat more serious article at Yahoo.
Three days after a teenage girl was attacked by a group of 20 men in Guwahati, when she was returning home after a late-night party, widespread anger and criticism rocked the state.
The girl had entered into a brawl in the bar with her friend and following an altercation some youths attempted to molest her, said police.
According to video footage shot by a local television channel, the mob continued molesting her for around half an hour before police reached the spot, rescued the girl and handed her over to her family.
The Guwahati police on Wednesday arrested three youths in connection with the incident.
"We have arrested three youths till now. We have information about some others involved in the incident on GS road on Monday night. Some of them are absconding," said city SSP, AP Barua.
The arrested includes a contractual employee of Amtron, Assam government's IT agency, Amarjyoti Kalita.
Kalita, who had also acted in an Assamese serial where he played the role of a policeman, has since been dismissed from service.
Two others who were arrested are Dhananjoy Basfor, a sweeper and Bubul Das a local tradesman, the SP said.
The accused were charged with unlawful assembly, obscene act and assault on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, following a written complaint filed by the girl's mother.
Meanwhile, chief minister Tarun Gogoi termed the incident as unfortunate.
He also directed the district administration and police to monitor all bars, clubs, discos and hotels and raid them at any time if there was report of any untoward incident.
Chairperson of Assam State Commission for Women Neera Barooah said the commission had taken cognisance of the incident and will decide on the next course of action based on police act report.

India: Getting Eve Teased? Just Film It!
Having led a somewhat sheltered life, I the term 'Eve Teasing' :- euphemism for sexually harrassing women- India, Pakistan, Nepal. I never noticed activity of that nature in India or Nepal but was a long time ago. In Malaysia it was more evident with groups of local youths on scooters harrassing western women, seeking pledges of friendship come marriage. This led to some women tourists wearing 'wedding bands' to repel these abusive, rejected suitors.SunSan wrote:Eve teasing, a popular pasttime in India, but not what you think it is.

Looks like there's an ethnic minority angle to this. The girl is clearly from a hilltribe and looks East Asian more than anything else, the men are all Indians. Maybe that's why the police, at the station just down the road, didn't bother double timing.
Sorry, don't know how to link the video here, can't do anything by right- clicking.

Not much fun being a girl for many in India, especially if you are from the lower castes. The film Bandit Queen is worth a look.

I worked with an Indian teacher here who told me that she would never go out of her house alone, guys would just walk up to her and grope her, I thought she was exaggerating a bit, but it seems there may be some truth in it after all.

I did, both times I visited India I was with a white woman, I can only think of one specific incident that stands out though where a drunk soldier groped the woman I was with, and the people around just laughed. It was always being reported in the papers too.I never noticed activity of that nature in India
I'm surprised she was in a bar at all, the local bars I remember in India were male only. The girl had entered into a brawl in the bar

I thought the top one was written tongue- in- cheek, and pretty well done too.

I had to do a double take, at first I thought I'd stumbled accross a Shiv Sena fascist article.

What I did see a few times in hotel lobbies, were groups of young men clamouring around some chap showing pictures of a western fashion magazine. The women in the mags were modelling lingerie and these chaps were straining to get glimpses of this 'soft porn'. It's an understatement to say there is a gap between the sexes in India, but I never saw examples of 'eve teasing'. The whole sexuality suppression thing was quite obvious though and maybe this is why they now behave the way they doLucky Lucan wrote:I did, both times I visited India I was with a white woman, I can only think of one specific incident that stands out though where a drunk soldier groped the woman I was with, and the people around just laughed. I do recall reading frequent reports of spouse murder in the paper; the preferred MO was dousing in kero and apply heat, usually because wife did not come up with more dowry for greedy husband and his family. Jesus ... Of interest to tome readers, the novel 'Shantaram' by Gregory Roberts is an insight to the life behind the scenes of the India I would only have scratched.
I don't recall any women in the bars either, but some really nice whiskies

Bloody Indians.
There is a funny programme on abc in australia called dumb, drink and racist.they take a group of Indians to Australia where they believe everyone is dumb, drunk and racist.
They get taken to some parts of Sydney and melbourne where Indians have been murdered or there is a racist history.
They even dress them up in flak jackets on one visit.
Of course India has a caste system and women are treated terribly.indians don't want girls as the dowry will bankrupt them.
Of course many girl babies die or are aborted and isn't there a place where widows are burnt with the deceased husband?

It's an old custom called Sati that still happens sometimes. There is also the more common the burning of brides whose dowry isn't big enough. These are often excused as cooking accidents, and the husband is free to marry again.ken svay wrote: isn't there a place where widows are burnt with the deceased husband?
