two little movie reviews
Fury
Brad Pitt is the lead in this WW2 tank movie about...well...tanks and ....you know....war is hell. I read a review that slammed the movie for it's "glorification of rape" or some such anti cum-stain rug munching feminazi bullshit so was expecting something quite controversial. Instead, we got a simple "if you don't take her in the bedroom and fuck her I will...." from a sargeant to his soldier and to me....the sex looked pretty consensual. Anyhow ...the movie is much to do about nothing at the end of the day really. Some outstandingly gory moments including one scene where a tank driver gets his head taken off by a large calibre shell. Fuck that was awesome. 5/10
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
I watched this with my 3 year old son and 6 year old daughter. I know right ! What kind of father am I? . I was a 70s child and grew up with the original so I had high expectations. I haven't seen preceding Hollywood attempts but this was fucking awesomely done. I wish i had seen it on a big screen. One thing that was perfectly true to the original was the black, leather clad apes riding horses - just wicked to see and the computer..er...shit...with the apes talking and what have you is very lifelike. A great way to spend two hours. 7/10
Now I am hanging out for Mad Max / Fury Road and the new Star Wars.

I saw both movies at the theater. I thought Fury was quite good. I mean it wasn't perfect, but the close-quarter action within the tank, as well the battle scenes and the obvious mental issues the tank commander has were all well made. When I saw that Panther tank hiding in the bushes I was like: "Oooooh shiiiiiiet. Tiger! Shit just got real!" and knew we were in for a good scene (I then started explaining how the Tiger was the best tank of the war and described it's various characteristics to my unimpressed date). The ending was a bit so-so, but good movie overall. I'd give it a 6.5-7. The acting was also quite good, but I could have done without all the over-the-top thick southern accents. The easiest guys to understand in the whole movie were the Mexican and the Germans... But I know RC has a hard-on for bogan and redneck accents so whatever...
One tank movie that's very good is "The Beast of War". It's about a Russian tank crew during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. That movie wasn't without it faults either (especially the very beginning), but it's an overall excellent movie about moral decisions. Gripping the whole way through.
DOTPOTA was also decent. One of the better Ape movies. The one right before it was also fairly good. Classic dove vs hawk movie which is meant to make you hate the stupid humans. 6-6.5/10.

Planet of the Apes was pretty good.
Stonehearst Asylum, adaptation of Poe novel - brilliant.
Maze Runner, great.
OldBoy, excellent
Tusk, weird shit man, but great idea.

I thought the first POTA remake was a bit crap, despite starring my favourite hot Indian actress, but it's one of 'em where the sequel is a thousand times better.
I came, I argued, I'm out
Dawn of The Planet of The Apes was great, and one of the best in the series. Caesar, played by Andy Serkis and Koba were awesome and memorable characters.
Oldboy is also a great movie, saw the Korean version years ago and had no idea what it would be about. Must see (Korean). Interesting to see the Hollywood adaptation of the original.
Movies I saw recently were Nightcrawler and The Best Offer, and both very good.

Planet of the Apes! Feed your kids the 70s originals in perhaps 3-4 years, at least the first 3 or if they want, all 7. The inter-references and time-travel mind-fucks are pretty fascinating at that age I think. Well it got me hooked back in the day
The beast of war and Oldboy are 2 among my personal favourites.
Nightcrawler reminded me of American psycho, an excellent and disturbing movie
Tusk... Thé worst movie in years. The ending is so ridiculous it makes you ashamed to have watched such a piece of crap until the last minutes.

Where is Ricecakes' review of In Bruges?

I thought Fury was pretty good - considering I am not a Brad Pitt fan and even less of a fan of American movies about WWII. But generally very much recommend. They managed to get through the movie without "America saved the world from Nazis" motifs.
kids are now watching DOTPOTA every night. they love the apes or "gulilla"as my boy calls them.

Tusk is really strange. Not a great movie but odd enough that it wasn't a bore.
Hunger Games Mockingjay - each movie ends like an advert for the next of the series. Really dissatisfying lack of closure to the latest movies in this series however with the "part 1" I should have known to just wait til part 2 is out and download #1 the day before.
Maze runner- I enjoyed this one but they of course end it with a setup for the next movie. Didn't bother me in this case and glad I saw this on the big screen.
I don't watch any of the war based movies.

Two great films from 2014 I watched recently:
"A Theory of Everything" a Stephen Hawking biopic, the actor playing Hawking is incredible and deserves an Oscar nod.
and
"Boyhood" from Richard Linklater who is a fantastic director. Linklater made the film over 12 years from I think '99 until 2012 with the same actors, so the cast visably ages over time; a literal 'coming of age' story.

I'm too lazy to write reviews, however two movies I watched this week and added to my favourite list were:
Starred Up
The Drop
