Hi there!
My partner and I bought tickets to go to Nepal for 5 weeks two days before the first earthquake (two separate round trip tickets; one from PP to Kuala Lumpur, then from Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu) -- though, since the second earthquake, we've decided the situation in Nepal is just too unstable to go for that amount of time. We were thinking of forgoing our flight to Nepal and just spending the 5 weeks in Malaysia, but have really no clue where to go or what to do.
I've obviously Googled things to do in Malaysia but there are so many options and places to go, I just can't decide! Has anyone been there that can give me some advice? Our tickets are from July 5th- August 8th.
Things to consider;
1. We are looking for a relaxing, Kep-type experience; quiet, good local food, not terribly expensive.
2. We are NOT backpackers, so we're looking to spend 2 weeks in two different places or 4 weeks in the same place (the extra week getting in and out of Kuala Lumpur).
3. We'll have around $2500-$3000 to spend.
4. We like nature and would like to stay away from big cities as much as possible!
Thanks in advance for your time!
Cheers,
Mackenzie

The Perhentian islands are great. Or the Sabah area of Malaysian Borneo for diving and beaches.
Just for your information, Ramadan starts on the 18th June and ends on 17th of July, something to consider when making your holiday plans.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
I've been in Nepal through the earthquakes and am now in Pokhara where we haven't had any tremors for weeks.
Tourists aren't really effected a great deal as accommodation is available, plane and bus operations are normal, treks are open and nepal is ready to welcome people in its own inimitable friendly way. In Pokhara itself, you wouldn't know there had been a major disaster at all other than a few aid groups to be seen.
As many like your self have chosen to avoid Nepal, the place is delightfully empty with great deals on accommodation and adventure activities because of low tourist numbers.
Unless you believe another major earthquake is imminent - I say come, the people of Nepal need you to drop in.

I suggest you go to Nepal and help support the locals, Its a great country an much nicer people than Malays
its safe ( well as safe as anywhere)
If not
Langkawi, lots of places to kick back on
Sumatra an lake Toba
$3,000 for 5 weeks and 2 people?
average Basic inexpensive accommodations are at least $35-40/night everywhere i have been and have driven over much of the country

"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Go North. Spend a few weeks in Penang, the food is great the locals are diverse and cool, it will be hard to have a bad time. (Not Kep like at all, but it is the best part of Malaysia, I spent a year there). After go to Langkawi, its an hour flight or a 3 hour boat from Penang, this can be more Kep like, but it would get boring IMO. I was on Langkawi last year the weekend Ramadan ended (in Malaysia they call it Hari Raya) it was a great time to be on the Muslim island because at sundown they have amazing local food markets, and they celebrate all weekend with great food and family. They will be very welcoming. PM me if you want I can give you a 1000 ideas.
