OK, looking ahead to the UK referendum in 2017. With one person = one vote, there is a chance the populist vote will be in favour of the UK leaving the EU.
So, my question is:
What would the result be on ex-pats living in, say Spain?
A great deal, nearly 1 million Brits currently live in Spain, the majority of which are retired and living on greatly reduced pensions (annuity type)
EU exit will mean loss of free health care and other benefits, what will this mean to those financially hanging on by their fingernails?
Property ownership?
The time they can spend there, visas, etc...
I know here we have some quite sharp analytical, legal and financial minds, be interesting to hear your opinions and discuss the possible outcomes.
It might also generate food for thought about the future changes in Asia and specifically Cambodia
The EU exit means to ex-pats in Spain

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
a) The referendum will likely not happen or be postponed
b) Britain cannot leave EU
c) If a) and b) DO happen, then ask a Norwegian or Swiss about how different life on the Costas is compared to Johnny Englishman.
d) How does this have anything to do with Cambodia?

b) it might be stupid to do but referendums have a record of populist outcomes and are harder to influence than other elections. The protest and populist votes could hold the sway?pedros wrote:a) The referendum will likely not happen or be postponed

d) I was thinking with, for example teh changes in Thailand and the move by some over to Cambodia. As Cambodia (if) develops and grows, will they also, as the Thai authorities seem to have, tire of some types of ex-pat and adjust or enforce laws that make live more difficult.

2 very different issues regarding 2 very different countries in 2 very different continents.
a) What can we do? Wait and see.
b) What will we do? Nothing much save drink a beer and return to example a).
So are you finally going to put up and shut up and move to Cambodia or are you frequenting Marbellaexpatforum.com and asking about whether you should retire there?

Good question and to be honest still weighing up the options. But as I am not 'running away' from anything and earning good money here, I guess there is no big rush, is there? I learn a lot from reading forums, taking long holidays (only a tourist) and researching, it is all about enjoying the journey.
I am not yet ready to sit nursing a beer, sat at a bar, with the only challenge of balancing making it last against drinking warm beer.
Life is an adventure, why rush it? Seems better to fully enjoy the chapter you are currently in.

My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
You think that that's life in Cambodia?EdinWigan wrote:I am not yet ready to sit nursing a beer, sat at a bar, with the only challenge of balancing making it last against drinking warm beer.

No not in the slightest and my apologies if you thought it was a comment about all ex-pats. I know there are many hard working folk there, who busy themselves with a wide range of work and social activities but I know me and it was me I was referring to. My wish not to slide into that position.Chuangt2u wrote:You think that that's life in Cambodia?EdinWigan wrote:I am not yet ready to sit nursing a beer, sat at a bar, with the only challenge of balancing making it last against drinking warm beer.
Nothing more, nothing less than that
Now with that said, it would be great to hear the opinions of those more wise in these areas than me. I am fully aware we have members who could offer great input. If we can move past the 'Lets Bash the Pie Eater' stage, I guess we will see

As its a UK vote the Scots Welsh and NI will not vote to leave the EU so it comes down to the English,They will make the rules so that a majority [ well pick a number say 65%] must vote to leave it will not be first past the post a majority of one will not mean an exit.
