funny you should say that. I was going to type out Sonny Bill earlier and had SWB in line of sight and doubted myself .. thinking "i thought his name was Sonny Bill. is it really Sonny William and they shortened it to Bill?" so I just resorted to what everyone else had writtenbigphatt wrote:It's SBW (Sonny Bill Williams), not SWB

@biggus phattus, you really do have an eye for detail. I stand duly corrected.
Re coach of the year award: fair dibs to Cheika, he has developed the makings of a good Wallaby side. My personal choice would have been Eddie Jones for the giant killers, Japan. Hansen didn't feature here, the ABs have always been the favourite; over the last 100 years, NZ has won 75% of their matches.

Ridden by a NZ jockey, the first female ever to win the Melbourne Cup. (well, she was born in Australia but her family is from NZ)RainMan wrote:A New Zealand bred horse, Prince of Penzance, wins the Melbourne Cup at $86violet wrote:RainMan wrote:And a NZ horse to win the Melbourne Cup

Bloody kiwis winning everything at the moment, and the cricket starts soon....
A fantastic ride by this Jockey, Michelle Payne. She is the second youngest of 10 kids. Her mum died when she was a kid. They are Aussies but if you want to claim her as a kiwi fair enough - can you take Russell Crowe too please. Prince of Penzance was born in NZ and passed in by that countries thoroughbreed elite. Bought for $50000 and trained and raced in Australia. My mate tipped it and I ignored him. He put $100 each way on it and pocketed 12K.

From what I've heard, Michelle was the one that recognised the potential for Prince of Penznce to win the Melbourne Cup. She's a feisty thing. Love her. Great family. The father has done well. Such a great outcome. I never actually "watch" the race. I did this year. So glad I did.

Prince of Penzance is part owned by a local fella up here in the Whitsundays.
He frequents a local drinking hole and had been spruiking to all who would listen about the Prince's chance in the Cup and the expected healthy odds on offer for the Prince.
Lots of people walked out of that pub with very thick wallets after the Melbourne Cup had been run and won.
Of course I stuck my neck out with a massive 5 bucks each way bet on the Prince..
