So, 'Theories' need to be supported by 'Scientific Facts' and then become 'Scientific Theories' without which they are just 'Theories' and theories, without such support are just guesses.Chuangt2u wrote:Ermmm, actually, no.EdinWigan wrote:

Science is a proven thing, theories are in the main academic popular opinion, not based on hard evidenced fact and so theories actually come under the label 'Magic' or at least guess work about magic.
They are just one, or more folk convincing others that their 'Theory' or idea about what is happening under the label is correct. Time and again we see them disproved.
Science is theories.
Only when those theories are proven to be wrong do they stop being theories and offer contribution to the catalog of actual facts.
If the theories are not proven wrong, they remain as theories, even though they may be perceived as scientific facts as they have survived rigorous assault to date. Someday, though, some guy may well come along and prove those 'perceived as scientific facts' to be wrong in some way, and in doing so will show that some detail of the whole is actual fact.
Science is not a proven thing until/unless it is a theory proven wrong.
How important is religion to your life?

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.
All theories are guesses. That includes scientific theories.
That they haven't yet been proven wrong is not to be taken as proof of being correct.
That's how Science advances - people discover that what previous generations had thought correct is actually incorrect in some way.
In showing something as incorrect, they can possibly show a part of the old theory now has a known true value or limitation.
When enough true values or limitations become known, then information that was included as a guess in the now disproved theory can possibly become classed as fact.

No. Theories, in science, which for clarity we'll refer to as "Scientific Theories", begin as hypotheses. After sufficient evidence has proven the hypothesis correct, and other scientists have verified the hypothesis through independent repetition of the results, then it becomes accepted as a theory after peer review, then more widely accepted by the general scientific community. These scientific theories can then change after more evidence demonstrates anomalies or situations such as extremely small scale that can be better explained by an adjusted or potentially completely new hypothesis.EdinWigan wrote:So, 'Theories' need to be supported by 'Scientific Facts' and then become 'Scientific Theories' without which they are just 'Theories' and theories, without such support are just guesses.Chuangt2u wrote:Ermmm, actually, no.EdinWigan wrote:

For example, gravity was a hypothesis by Isaac Newton. After his publication of his hypothesis including proofs of its applicability in real world examples that could be tested by others, it became accepted as a theory and as a general fact. Later on, our understanding of gravity evolved, and we realized that gravity isn't a separate force, but a property of space-time, and it's curvature of space-time, caused by large objects such as planets, that gives rise to gravity. Now we're exploring the possibility of gravitational waves. But if you want to know how long it will take for a rock to hit the ground when thrown off a building, you'd use Newton. It's close enough and models what we can observe well enough.

Here's a good example re scientific theories...
Theories galore are about to be disproven as the domino effect from this ripples outward into medical research. New facts will be arising shortly.

In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. The discovery could have profound implications for diseases from autism to Alzheimer's to multiple sclerosis.

Missing link found between brain, immune system -- with profound disease implications
- Vessels directly connecting brain, lymphatic system exist despite decades of doctrine that they don’t
- Finding may have substantial implications for major neurological diseases
- Game-changing discovery opens new areas of research, transforms existing ones
- Major gap in understanding of the human body revealed
- ‘They'll have to change the textbooks’
In a stunning discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers at the School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist. That such vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on its own, but the true significance of the discovery lies in the effects it could have on the study and treatment of neurological diseases ranging from autism to Alzheimer’s disease to multiple sclerosis.

I could also argue that it's the influence of the Heathens rather than atheists that make Iceland so great. On a per capita basis, they have a huge percentage of Heathens there compared to any other Western nation.
