Éirí Amach na Cásca
100 years ago this Easter Monday the Irish Republicans (IRB) launched a failed offensive in Dublin to oust those pesky British (Not for the first time) from their shores.
It ultimately failed with the surrender of the rebels and their execution at the hands of the miffed British.
The latter probably swayed the majority of the Irish population in favour of the rebels and independence from Britain.
This led to the Irish War of independence some three years later and the eventual return to a rebublic and an Irish Free Stare, but only for the South.
The North opted to remain part of Britain and certain factions (IRA, who fought in both incidents) have continued to fight to this day for a return to an truly free Irish state. (There was also a Civil War between these two parties, the British backed forces won of course)
These celebrations have only just restarted in 2006 in Dublin and this 100 year celebration will be big. Especially in the USA no doubt!
Anyway. As a plastic paddy my dad made sure I was well versed on the history of Ireland and "Those fecking British arseholes", even though he married one, so read up. It's quite interesting.

(The actual Easter Rising was on 24th April 1916 but as Easter is movable they just celebrate it on Easter Monday.)
