There is heroin all over the world and that page you linked to was about a guy found dead with a needle in his arm. It's possible that he thought he was snorting coke, sure...

I do not think it is the availability of Heroin, it is the fact some mistake it for cocaine, which can also be injected, well that is my understanding, I am no authority, I just thought it was of interest

There has been a lot of discussion about tuk tuk drivers in Phnom Penh selling heroin and pretending it's coke, but I'm starting to wonder if it's apocryphal. It gets trotted out every time a young westerner ends up dead in some shitty hotel on 172 or 136.

I know of a journalist here who is trying to investigate whether this is actually happening so he can do an expose, but after two weeks of trying he hasn't managed to find anyone on the streets who is actually selling heroin as coke. On the contrary, one little shit even offered to let him try the coke for free before selling it to him.

Number one reason for junkies od'ing with needle in arm is the difference of the purity they have been used to.

I would bet that the motos / tuk tuk's pushing coke, it is junk, or who knows what else (meth) and various cuts.
coke in Bangkok goes for 3,000-4,000 baht/gr retail ....not exactly cheap
u can get a reasonable (75% purity) junk for under 1,000 baht

Yes, Phuket, that's exactly what he is doing - asking them if they are selling heroin labelled as coke. I'm glad you're around so that he will realise how silly that strategy is.

He is actively asking for coke to see what he will be offered. He has a heroin test kit to test what he might be sold.

2, all one needs do is buy some junk and cut it with procaine or Lidocaine ( which produces the numbing like coke) and some Mannitol which gives the sparkle and adds weight PLUS i bet 75% of the people buying have really no idea what real coke is like

If anyone is selling coke for under 2,000 a gram it is not and like i said they look very different under a flashlight. and taste different, don't need a kit to tell.

The first recent case of White Heroin was what they were on about in Amsterdam, folk thinking it is Cocaine.

I don't know Phuket. I'm just passing on an anecdote. Clearly he should have had a seasoned expert like yourself to guide him. I'll send him your way.

You yourself say 75% of people wouldn't know coke anyway and that it's relatively easy to 'cut' heroin to appear like coke. That, I suppose, is the key point. Are people unused to drugs turning up here, hearing it's easy to find coke and wanting to try it, and finding they are being flogged heroin instead with deadly consequences. I don't know. Drugs bore me.

I've already related my own personal experience of this scam on another thread and it was not apocryphal. If your journo friend is interested, scobienz, it happened in February last year at the old Lakeside district, when I took a tuk tuk home from one of their Arty parties.
As I said on the thread, the driver said at first it was coke, then later admitted it was heroin. I have no idea what it was, as I wasn't interested in either. At an asking price of $30 a bag, it certainly wasn't coke. Maybe just an isolated incident?

Not an urban myth. I investigated a case myself in 2010. Not sure how often it happens, but I can confirm one case for sure.
