Hillsborough victims were killed unlawfully, jury rules
96 Liverpool fans who were killed during a crush at an FA Cup semi final match at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield in 1989 were killed unlawfully, a jury ruled today. Prosecutions could follow and the ruling puts an end to the lie that the fans themselves were to blame.
When the event happened the most popular British tabloid The Sun blamed the fans. They haven't sold a single copy of their rag in the city since.

Was someone arguing that they were killed "lawfully"? that's odd. Can't you just say "accident" in the UK?
Weren't some fans partially to blame for jumping the turnstiles and pushing their way in without tickets?
I mean, I totally understand if people want to argue that a small number of ticketless fans entered, and that their actions were foreseeable and the authorities should have prepared for this and made better decisions. But I can't accept the suggestion that no fan deserved any blame, or that the fans collectively share 0% of the blame and the authorities who opened the wrong gates and didn't stop fans from trampling other fans deserve 100% of the blame.
If I said this publicly in a Liverpool pub on a Friday night, would I get a severe beating?

What"s the difference between a cow and the Hillsborough tragedy?

My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.

As I recall (and my memory of this tragic event is rather distant, though I, as a Forest fan, was really looking forward to the match) The Sun was boycotted in the city of Liverpool for claiming that 'Pool fans were rifling the pockets of the dead. I do not recall The Sun actually blaming the fans for the incident. Perhaps alan or somebody could correct me on this.
Either way, many were trying to get in to see the game, so authorities should have been more aware that there would likely be problems - the shutting of some gates - I refer to the infamous 'locked steel pens', was, imho, one of the main contributors to this tragedy.
My most bitter memory of police incompetence at a football match was when a cop shoved me pretty hard, aided by a boot up the jacksy, down a terrace at the City Ground (Forest's ground), yelling at me not to effing sneak my way into the terracing behind the goal. Actually, I had paid to enter that part of the ground, so my experience of dumb policing suggests that over-zealous cops were probably right to shoulder most of the blame at Hillsborough.

It was a shocking conspiracy between the police and everyone else responsible. It takes a long time to see justice done.

Why is a jury answering questions on this thirty years later? Is the plan to throw a bunch of now 80 year old ex-stadium security executives in prison for being bad at their jobs and then trying to blame supporters for their incompetence?

It's common in the UK for these ridiculous inquiries to spring up years after the fact. I haven't been following this one, but the pattern is generally that some biased committee is set up soon after the disaster or incident. They come to conclusions which absolve them of any guilt. A few years later some concerned citizens try to get the ball rolling again, but invariably end up with an inconclusive result. Then, a few decades afterwards, it will be picked up on again and huge amounts of resources will be spent trying to figure out what happened. Of course most of the protagonists and victims will be dead or have fading memories by then. They'll have another Hillsborough Inquiry in 2089 on the anniversary.

That's pretty accurate. This is from the BBC:Lucky Lucan wrote:It's common in the UK for these ridiculous inquiries to spring up years after the fact. "At the original inquests, the then South Yorkshire coroner Dr Stefan Popper decided the hearing should only investigate events before a cut-off time of 3.15pm. He argued that it was unnecessary to look at events beyond this time.
On the evidence of pathologists, he said all those who died would have suffered irreversible brain damage by that time and were beyond saving.
That meant the hearing would not look into the emergency response to the disaster. This was a highly controversial decision strongly disputed by the families of the deceased.
In 2009, the government set up the Hillsborough Independent Panel to review documents relating to the disaster. In September 2012, the panel produced a report based on 450,000 pages of documents previously stored by the government, other public bodies, private companies and individuals. A month later, the attorney general applied for the original inquests to be quashed. In December 2012, following a campaign by the bereaved families, the High Court ordered a fresh hearing."

You're right springrain. Here is the Sun report which led to it being boycotted in the city still. The journalist later said he was horrified at how his story had been edited by management.springrain wrote:As I recall (and my memory of this tragic event is rather distant, though I, as a Forest fan, was really looking forward to the match) The Sun was boycotted in the city of Liverpool for claiming that 'Pool fans were rifling the pockets of the dead.
