The one other alternative is right at our door step so if it comes to that, let them have it.

Well, while we are at it, let's do a check on the belligerents on the ground in Syria.springrain wrote: So, one wonders, who is to blame? "Who will have won when the soldiers have gone from ___?" You could fill in the blanks for: "...the Lebanon/Syria/Iraq/Israel/Jordan/Egypt ... one might even go a bit further afield ... say, N. Korea, the disputes in the China Sea(s), ... (dot ... dot ... dot ...) Iran? Turkey? Yes, it is back to those; those countries which are brave enough to rely on their own identities ,,, without reliance on a (non - centrally - introduced) Central Banking system.
Funny you should mention North Korea, because they have troops there supporting Assad. So do China, Russia, Venezuela, Iran, Hezbollah (Lebanon), Algeria, Iraq and Belarus.
Various rebel groups like al-Nusra Front, Fatah el-Islam, Daesh, Free Iraqi Army, Kurds, etc. All sorts of different militias and breakaway groups.
Fighting Assad you have the various rebel groups backed by US, UK, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Quatar, Jordan.
That's quite a few countries and I'm sure I've missed loads, I didn't include the Israelis occupying the Golan Heights or the UN stationed there and elsewhere.
Anyway, here's an amusing video which shows that you don't necessarily need previous military experience to join ISIS:
