NHS bars obese patients from treatment
This is an interesting on. A national health service area in norther England has told obese patients and smokers that they are at the back of the list for non-essential treatment, and could have to wait for more than a year for non-elective surgery unless they slim down. If they lose ten percent of their weight they can be pushed to the front of the queue again.
Is it right to discriminate against patients this way? I have to say I have some sympathy for the approach. Obesity and smoking related diseases are the biggest drain on already scarce NHS services. Obesity is pandemic in the UK at the moment.

BMI of 35 and greater - morbidly obese usually comes with a whole host of chronic conditions that definitely increases risk of complications during surgery. Weight loss is definitely recommended. But BMI 30? Unless there are some other chronic conditions, the increased surgical risk just on BMI is low.
If surgical rationing based on BMI is taken to it's logical conclusion, then soon only Khmers who just recently moved to Great Britian will be eligible for surgery!
Rubbish rationing rationale done under the guise of the greater public good.

Don't worry, be happy.
If they are themselves sick, then it is their own fault. There should be more pressure on the fat asses of the world to lose some weight.

I'm not overweight, but also think some people just put on weight easily and find it hard to lose the pounds, whether that be due to genetics, metabolism or ladies hormones kicking in once you reach over 30. I've also noticed that more anxious types tend to remain skinny.
We all know people who can drink beer everyday and eat what they want whilst still staying thin. That's not to say fat is building up around their vital organs though.

I'm not fat and recently switched to ecigs after 23 years of smoking (yeah, the look stupid but I feel a lot better) and I don't like this.
While there's something to be said about people having bad habits and not looking after themselves, once you start down this road, where do you draw the line?
I like how they're going after easy targets (fatsos and smokers) but they haven't said anything about alcohol consumption that costs the NHS billions every year and is just as much sell inflicted as the others.
Finally, aren't they paying the same tax contributions (or more for smokers) as everyone else? Don't they then have a right to the service the same as everyone else?
EDIT: Agree with Felg that BMI is shit. If I don't do anything, I default to "skinny fat" and so a BMI test would say I'm "healthy" but smoking, drinking and zero exercise is not a healthy person.

Life insurance & health insurance companies have been discriminating against smokers for years.
Also alcoholics can currently get de-prioritised for treatment for 'self inflicted' issues like liver treatment.
Agree that fatties and smokers are easy targets and this could be the thin end of a very complex wedge.
But this isn't really so new is it. I'm a little surprised how long it has taken to introduce.
How long before budget airlines introduce extra fees for fatties?
First 50kg (including luggage) free with price of ticket, $25 per 10kg thereafter?

If governments were serious about obesity they would stop promoting the "Food Pyramid," which promotes a diet heavy in grains and cereals.
There is plenty of research that points to potentially psychoactive substances in certain agricultural products - cereals and milk.

....cereals and dairy foods are not natural human foods, but rather are preferred because they contain exorphins. This chemical reward was the incentive for the adoption of cereal agriculture in the Neolithic. Regular self-administration of these substances facilitated the behavioural changes that led to the subsequent appearance of civilisation.

I just think that obese people eat too much and don't do enough exercise.
Healthy people should always be prioritized over unhealthy people because healthy people are necessary for a healthy society.

Serious question: have you ever tired buying healthy foods?KPTIC wrote:If they are themselves sick, then it is their own fault. There should be more pressure on the fat asses of the world to lose some weight.
Low-fat/low-sodium etc. Have you noticed they are almost always more expensive than regular shit?
If any govt was really serious they'd close down McDonald's and other fast-food shit, plus people who use fructose/corn syrup in foods, and fight against including nutritional info on labels.
Yes, the individual is also responsible, but FFS, surround children with junk food outlets from birth, don't be surprised/absolve the same outlets of blame.
Christ, by the same logic, Coca-Cola should be banned.

That is simply not true. Fresh vegetables and fruit are very cheap compared to processed, sugary and high fat food. The key is that many of the people who are morbidly obese default to what they think are relatively cheap 'easy meals' - pizzas, pies, stodgy stuff, because it takes no effort to prepare. Therein lies the problem; eating healthy doesn't take money; it takes effort and discipline, something that those inclined to obesity are unlikely to have.
Having said that, BMI is a ridiculous guide for obesity. I'm in the UK at the moment, and the levels of obesity are extraordinary. I've never seen anything like it.
I have also lost 6kg in the three weeks I've been here by doing exactly what I said above: eating fresh veggies, lots of low fat protein like fish and chicken, and cutting down on the stuff that would be much easier to prepare and fill myself up on.
