At the end of the day, the so-called 'deep state' decides, and they seem to want Hillary. Imho, she is far more dangerous than Trump.
He is also too 'friendly' with Russia, which is problematic as so much of US Foreign Policy since the end of the cold war has focused on control of Central Asia. If he wants to win, he will have to appease the deep state somehow.
*Wild theory of the day*
If Hillary wins, there will be a big war.

a vote NOT for Trump is a vote for Hillary
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer." HST
Lol, before Obama there was no war in Syria, Lybia and the Ukraine, race relations in the US are the worst in decades. But yeah, lets have another four years of that but this time with the head hawk of the previous administration as president.Edwardo wrote:Right. It's obviously the last 8 years of warmongering under Obama that have been the major cause of Americapresidentoblems. Everything was just peachy before that. And of course, rational and level-headed Donald Trump is just the person to bring people together for a more peaceful world going forward. Brilliant insight.Visser wrote:Trump would be a welcome change after 8 years of Obama/Clinton warmongering.
You sir are a genius.

People in Ukraine really hate it when people say "the Ukraine".Visser wrote:

I wonder if there's something deeper going on in the world than simply right vs left?
A sort of technology, 15 seconds of fame, constant selfies, UFC, Pop Idol, dumbing down of the world - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, thing.
The world has turned into a narcissistic spunk bubble.

The word Ukraine means "borderland", before it was part of the larger entity of the Soviet Union so the use of "the" before the word was historically correct (English teachers - green tick or red cross?), now it's singular entity the name has already stuck. If they don't like it they should have changed the name of their country during independence. Other examples:prahocalypse now wrote:People in Ukraine really hate it when people say "the Ukraine".
The Northern Territories, the Great Plains etc etc.
First the world became digitalized then the dominant actors of digitalization trapped us in filter bubbles. What we are seeing is the first elections influenced by filter bubbles.spitthedog wrote:I wonder if there's something deeper going on in the world than simply right vs left?

From Wikipedia, if you can't bother with the video:
Dick heads are algorithmically grouped by their narrow views and because of the filter bubbles they are never exposed to the opinions that challenge their own. This enhances the feeling of being right and belonging to a tribe where everybody agrees with each other. Then they all hold hands as they go to the election booths.A filter bubble is a result of a personalized search in which a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on information about the user (such as location, past click behavior and search history)[1][2][3] and, as a result, users become separated from information that disagrees with their viewpoints, effectively isolating them in their own cultural or ideological bubbles.
Part of the problem is that humanity has stopped reading books and therefore have no way of learning from history or challenging their views. We have entered the brave new world where intelligence and questioning is shunned by the dominant culture. It's a great tragedy that leads us down a dangerous path. Who cares about classic literature and history when you have all these cute cats on the Internet and Wiz Khalifa singing "black and yellow" on repeat?
Art and culture have been hijacked by people who don't do what they do because they feel that they need to, but do what they do to be something specific. While activists fought the battle for net neutrality big corporations like Facebook and Google silently trapped us in other ways. It turns out the activists fought the wrong battle because evidently centralization was the real threat.
We are doomed unless we can somehow revive the chaotic environment that existed in the 70s. I believe it was Nixon who said that the biggest threat to "us" (national security, foreign policy and the government) were university students who gathered in groups, took LSD, read books and talked. We lost a fraction of that when they banned and demonized LSD, then we lost the rest to social media like Facebook and Snapchat.
Basically, we're fucked. And I don't say that lightly.
Why Scientists Are Upset About The Facebook Filter Bubble Study:
As election season approaches in the U.S., it's important to be aware that the opinions and stories you see on Facebook are strongly influenced by what Facebook's news feed algorithm thinks you should see. And because Facebook's algorithm changes frequently, it is hard to understand why you might be seeing one article instead of another. The news feed, despite what Facebook repeatedly claims, is not simply a reflection of your interests.
Bless

They did. When they declared independence in 1991, they chose the name Ukraine.starkmonster wrote:

Those examples use the definite article 'the' because they are plural.starkmonster wrote:

To attach an article to a word for no good reason: It's a Crimea.

I've said this before on here many times. Information is the modern day calorie, we've gone from a deficit to a surplus in a very short space of time, far faster than our ability to adapt physiologically or modify our behaviours accordingly. We had to wait for an obesity epidemic before we really started to appreciate the detrimental impact of low cost calories in the form of heavily processed food checked full of sugars, chemicals and preservatives.
The same thing will happen with information. At the moment we are all gouging ourselves on the information equivalent of Pringles and Coca-Cola, most of us, especially the youth have a wide but shallow base of knowledge. We prefer the summaries, headlines, extracts and commentary that forms a murky film over the top of the raw information and rarely do we punch through that layer and attempt to parse the raw information ourselves.
Just like the current health revolution of raw organic foods, paleo, nothing from a packet, hiit training, crossfit and lifting heavy things etc etc the same thing will happen with information. We will start looking for raw information direct from the source, we will go back to reading, apprenticeship and mastery and the desire to know a great deal about a very small number of things rather than a little bit about everything.
Trump is a great example, he's getting bashed left right and center. But how many that "hate" him and literally can't say his name without physically shacking have sat down and watched a whole Trump speech start to finish without any commentators giving an intro and outro? How many have gone onto his website and read all of his position statements? I would imagine fewer than 1%.
In the same way we took control of our diets because we know that we are what we eat. It's time to take back control of our information diet, good first steps:
- Disconnect the cable TV and the 24 hour news porn that comes with it
- Stop using content aggregators such as Facebook or Google News as a primary news source
- If something is important enough you will hear about it, you don't need minute by minute updates
- Stop being a headline whore skipping constantly to the new issue of the hour
- Choose a few subjects that you truly care about and dive in as deep as you can
