The quarterback of the 49ers has started a huge debate in the US by pointedly refusing to stand up during the national anthem. He has now been joined by one or two teammates and players from other franchises. He says he is protesting about race relations in the US.
I quite admire his bravery. In a culture where adherence to the flag is almost slavish - albeit a bit dopey and ceremonial - that took some balls.
It reminds me of the famous black panther salute from the 69 Olympics. If I remember my history, the two athletes who did that salute were subsequently kicked out of the games.

The players have their right to protest. But angry fans and military veterans whoever else takes personal offense to the player protests have their right to boycott advertisers and sports teams or "boo" those players as they see fit. He isn't protesting by saying "I refuse to play and refuse to accept payment in order to protest against racism in America". It appears that he expects his money to keep rolling in and he wants to be a hero for his cause without really sacrificing anything.
"The final straw actually involved my mortal enemy vladimir, who you may or may not know is an insufferable, overposting asshat."

Agree tpt, he's often the forgotten man, but seems like he was more than just a passive bystander:

Actually, he's the backup quarterback. This Trump quote is kind of funny:alanclarke72 wrote:The quarterback of the 49ers
I think it's a great lack of respect and appreciation for our country and I really said they should try another country, see if they like it better. See how well they'll be doing. See if they are going to be making $20 million being a second-string quarterback.
