Ryder Cup 2016
Ryder Cup 2016
It's that time of two years again.
Bookies have USA quite strong favourites at about 1/2 with Europe at 2/1. I think 2/1 is a great price and we'll show the Yanks what teamwork is yet again and bring home the cup. 11/1 for the draw is also tempting.
Whatever way it looks like it should be a cracker.

JJ, you beat me to it - I was going to start a thread on this great golfing tournament, but never mind.
I wouldn't quite put it as you do. It should be all about teamwork, which is why individual Prima donnas tend not to do so well. I'll never forget Nick Faldo's efforts in the fourballs & foursomes being much poorer than his performance in the individual holes.
So, I would argue whether the Europeans display any more team work than the Americans; I would also point out that you were anti-Europe over Brexit, but now you are being Pro-Europe. There is a bit of hypocrisy there, old chap!
Anyway, I also hope for a European win & am glad to see that we are underdogs - but with a good chance of bringing home the bacon.
Nothing personal against the Americans - just a sporting hope. May the best team win!

It's an interesting dynamic because of course these are individual competitors playing together as a team. Of course both teams are absolutely desperate to win, and I am sure the home fans will be fairly enthusiastic (sic) too.
It just seems to be that Europe tend to come together as a team a little bit better than the Americans, I dont know why, just seems that way to me.

Interesting how the team dynamics can be applied to both teams, imho. I've always enjoyed the format - I love all sports, but the competitive nature of Ryder Cup golf is always special. It's often about the special chemistry of pairings - Jose Olazabal & Seve Ballesteros spring to mind. (Dear old Seve, passing away at the age of just 54.)
Yep, I look forward to this offering!
***Edit***
I'll correct the claim that Nick Faldo had a better record on the singles - a slightly better record, but I never really thought of him as a good team player.

(JJ, I'll also call myself a bit of a hypocrite as I also opposed Europe in Brexit - but this is about sport, not a bunch of corrupt Bureaucrats running our country.)
Let's hope for a great tournament, played in a good spirit & the best team winning!

Yeah I dont think I ever said I was anti Europe - love the place. Anti EU, yeah as they are fucktards!
This is one of the sports highlights along with major football tournaments. Great competition played out with enormous pride and honour by both teams in front of incredibly passionate fans for no money. Pure sport.
Faldo did have a great record, interesting that Woods, even at the top of his game, never really dominated in Ryder Cup competition and could even have been too much of a distraction to the rest of his team along the way.
Two to one is very generous with the number of top ten players we have in the side, still at their place, with whatever nutters there are following them around, and possibly the strongest US side who knows.
Draw and Europe to retain at 11/1 is looking tempting.

Rory coming into form nicely this weekend.
In (relatively) recent years I've generally thought that the Europeans were much more of a team.
I initially thought it was because on world rankings they were normally inferior to the yanks but recently this hasn't been the case.
I felt that there was a bit of a change after 99 @ Brookline. Although maybe that was just in my mind.

That seems like a great price given the 'sportsmanship' we often see at the Ryder Cup when sufficient points to retain are reached.Jock Jock wrote:.

Little story re betting on the Ryder Cup. Valderrama 1997 and Monty concedes a 15 foot putt to Scott Hoch on the final green for a half as the overall match was already won. Unfortunate for a friend of mine who had a bet running which was dependent on a Monty victory. Happy that the Europeans won but a little peeved he had lost a sizeable payday he wrote a good humoured letter to Monty pointing out the implications of his sportsmanship from a punters viewpoint. A view weeks later there was a knock at his door and a mail guy handed over an unexpected parcel delivery. Inside was a handwritten letter from Monty saying that he hoped the enclosed items would make up for his financial loss. It was full of a range of Ryder Cup memorabilia autographed by the whole European team. Great personal gesture from a European Golf legend.

Jut checked out the teams. Looked at USA and though they were light on experience - only 3 people have 3 or more RC appearances.
Then looked at Europe team. 6 debutants! But heavier on experience with Garcia, McIlroy, kaymer, rose, stenson and Westwood all with 4 plus appearances.
Seems very heavy on debutants though - not much Clarkey could do as only one was a wildcard pick.
Pchum Ben is brilliantly timed this year!

'For the Americans to stand a chance of winning, they need their baying mob of imbeciles to caress their egos every step of the way. Like one of those brainless bastards from your childhood, the one that pulled down your shorts during the school’s Christmas assembly (f**k you, Paul Jennings), they only have the courage to keg you if they’re backed up by a giggling group of reprobates. Team Europe needs to shut those groupies up.
They need to silence the pudgy, basement-dwelling, irritants, stuffed on cookie dough and pissy beer, pausing between mouthfuls of hotdog so they can scream ‘Baba booey’ until their jelly faces turn red.
They need to stun the angry, unwashed, Make America Great Again swarm, desperately gripping their concealed-carry compensators and belting out a mini-erection inducing ‘mashed potato,’ hoping to impress their cousin.
They need to smash the obnoxious dads, with their shiny teeth, Lego man hair, medicated ex-wives, and resentful children. Squeezed into their cargo shorts and boating shoes, they’ll bellow ‘get in the hole’ whilst high-fiving all the other members of the Dentists’ Big Game Hunt Society.'

Unfortunately, that'll just make them worse. I'd prefer to stick to the golf. It doesn't need snide comments to sell a great competition like this. There is enough spice, without a bucket full needing to be added.
Can't wait for the first pairings to be announced tomorrow evening (our time).

I dunno I think an integral part of it is the banter and patriotism of the fans, these comments should charge that even further I would have thought.

Foursome pairings announced.
The opening pairing is tasty. Olympic 1&2 vs Speith and Reed. Speith always dangerous and Reed really fed upon the Atmosphere last time around. I think he may have been USA's best performer (and was also a bit of a tit!)
Rookie second match with Rory...against tough opponents - I suppose they have to play sometime.
