Actually I think i'd probably prefer watching the women's resource centre than the world rally champs...

I do really enjoy ironman and triathlon events.the_purple_turtle wrote:The Ironman World Champs in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, is on October 8th. You have the pros who qualify on a points system, and even after 8hrs of racing can be only seconds apart at the finish. Jan Frodeno is the defending champ, but anything can happen in the heat, and pros blow up on the run from gunning the bike leg just like the mere mortals. Then you have the age groupers who have either qualifed at single Ironman events, thrown enough money at it by getting a spot through an auction, or qualified through the Legacy programme by completing 12 full IM events in the last 12 years. So basically journeyman triathletes as well as amateurs at the top of their game are racing against their heroes under some of the most gruelling conditions around.
The live coverage is adequate, but the Hollywood slick edited movie version is inspiring as it covers the pro event as well as profiling the stories of a select few amateurs who have overcome some major struggles to live the dream of racing Kona.
Here's last year's race:

My experience with the Ryder Cup is the feeling of an exhibition game, just going through the motions. More interested in where they're going for dinner/drinks that night.Khmerhamster wrote:Jock Jock's post on the Ryder Cup has got me thinking about what is the best sporting event.
For me I think the Ryder Cup takes it. It has rivalry, teamwork, variety of competition, tactics, its extremely competitive (normally) & it lasts long enough but not too long that you lose interest.
(Also Northern Ireland isn't irrelevant!')
Anyone ever been to watch it live?
I love the World Cup (football i.e. soccer for non-English speakers) but it probably lasts a bit too long. The Olympics are great but they are multi-disciplined so probably not a fair comparison.
I'm guessing that there may be different responses from other nationalities.

Baseball is actually the only major US sport which I enjoy watching. True story, as a kid I was in Canada for a whole summer staying with relatives and went to open trials for a Blue jays youth team (or feeder team, I'm not sure). I made it through the first two trials despite having never played the game before and really having no idea what I was meant to do. Then I had to go home before the final trial. Who knows, I could have been a star.Jock Jock wrote:Just watched a great game between the Jays and the Yanks, two bench clearing kick offs and a grandstand finale, wrong bloody result but great game.
Baseball is a great sport to watch live, but you kinda have to have spent some long hot summers in North America and been to a bunch of games to really get it IMO.
Hope the Blue Jays can go further this year, tonight was a blow though as they are clinging to a playoff berth.

The Brownlee brothers are providing great stories to go along with it too.
See them last week when Jonny was leading but went doolally with heat exhaustion in the last 500m? His brother alistair was joint 2nd behind him and gave up the chance of a win to help his brother and push him over the line in 2nd place.

When I look at the Bundesliga players then I see some super-fit blokes that are hitting the gym hard. Sure, like any other sport, talent is needed, but the players are training a lot harder than they were 20 years ago.spitthedog wrote:Also, size, strength or even speed are not a necessity in football. Anyone can play it.
It's classless. Some poor kid on the other side of the world could be the next superstar.

Fair point when compared with rugby. But less so with American football.DetroitMuscle wrote:Soccer - a bunch of pussies flopping around on the ground, acting like they are hurt.

OK, I'm back in. I should appear after the next points update.Spigzy wrote:No, just rejoin, you should have your total from GW1, the K440 league is set that way, just checked the settingsKhmerhamster wrote:Yeah, I was doing reasonably well.
I'm not quite sure what happened but I accidentally left the league. I was dicking around looking at other leagues and set my phone down unlocked. When I picked it up again I had left the 440 league.
If I join again I think I only get points allocated from the date I join.
