Non english speaking Europe politics
The recent Brexit and USA elections gave several threads, some still running strong.
I wish to give a try to speak about Italy EU referendum, German and French coming elections and all other european countries that might have interesting coming political news.
I must say that last week and this Sunday French right wing primaries results were a big surprise to me (and seemingly for many), except for the awaited and superb ejection of former crook president N.Sarkozy that apparently and thankfully
made the day of a vast majority of French citizens.
Of course I see this result as a non event yet for non europeans English speaking nationals (hence my dear Americans and Aussie friends no need to feel excluded) but it might nonetheless be of significal importance and I think the F.Fillon choice might have unexpectedly opened quite a few new options for the next May french presidential race.
I am now half expecting a big surprise in the same vein as Brexit/Trump events but maybe not with such a obvious and comparable populist result as the FN.
I now indeed forsee a possible and rather more subtile surprise, like a left liberal stealing it and puting the left ideas back in business when everyone was giving the socialists for dead mainly because of a disastrous presidential figure image that could only be a superficial handicap.
Meanwhile Angela Markel just signed for a fourth run and I would be interested to hear german expats views on what is happening on their side if the Rhein.
Not to mention the italian referendum about which medias seems to keep very quiet. Apparently not so long ago many Italians lost all their savings in some failing banks thanks to Europe diktats (Germany and France ?). Is a pay back result on the way ?
The marching boots background noise echoing from tactical theaters like syria/Ukraine/S Asia sea and the possible shift of sympathies from many players toward Russia, might have given putin the very good hand he was wishing for, making the stakes all the more interesting.
However would the subject bears little interest to any non brainwashed/partisan members, don't hesitate to redirect me toward the newest and surely enjoyable new scammer/punch thrower threads so I can live through a few nights of a daughter pleasing Aeon mall ice ring self induced rib cage painful fall.
Une fois n'est pas coutume: bless,

On the French side I'd be delighted if Macron decided to run. Quite a few people fed up with the socialists inept government but wary of a French Thatcher or trumpette might create a welcome upset.

PoliticoThe man ( Hubert Védrine ) who once was the face of French diplomacy — and a key player in European integration for almost 20 years — now says Europe needs a time-out.
How influential is Mr. Védrine in French politics today and will his opinion have any affect on the political parties and upcoming elections?

I would also be very interested to hear the perspectives of the frog, kraut, wop and dago on the state of The Union. Cloggies too.
Not much in the English press about the opinions of ordinary people rather than their representatives, though the ones I meet around town all have pretty strong opinions

France is very interesting, it looks like it will be Francois Fillon and Le Pen in the second round run off. So the final choice will be between a self-professed Thatcherite and a nationalist.
For me it would be a hard choice between these two. Fillon is all about reducing the size of the state and the free market which France clearly needs, but then he's still pro-EU, which makes me doubt all his other positions as disingenuous.
Then we have La Pen who would initiate a Frexit referendum, which if successful would mean the effective end of the EU (which obviously I'm all for). The problem with her is that a lot of her policies are not a shift towards liberty. On face value (reading the FN policy statements) they would just represent a shift from liberal state authority to nationalist state authority. That said, if I were French I think I think a could put up with a few years of that, if it meant knocking the final nail in the coffin of the EU.

Fuck it, sitting on the fence is boring. I am now officially endorsing Marine Le Pen! Viva Le Pen!
The previous policy statements I found in English were on France24. I prefer to hear the views of candidates from their own mouth, so have done some YouTubing and found lots of here speeches translated. It's clear here key positions are anti-globalization, respect of nation state democracy and the end of the EU super state. SOLD.
From the horses mouth:
What will be super interesting in France is to see whether or not the establishment has learnt a lesson from Brexit and Trump or not. By that I mean, will they try to dress up anti-globalisation and the protection of the national interest as racism, xenophobia and misogyny, or will they take a different tack and actually attempt to tackle the issues of globalisation head on? - Wage compression / mass-immigration / crony capitalism
I mean, you couldn't blame the Clinton camp for their strategy. At that time Brexit looked like a strange one off, rather than part of a much broader tectonic shift. But for the entrenched powers in France, such complacency seems suicidal.
P.S French liberals, please remember, that if you don't vote for Le Pen, then you are a misogynist and an enabler of the oppressive white patriarchy.

France presidency: Francois Hollande decides not to run again
I will be watching the election in April and May and wondering if Trump's win will help Le Pen. ^^Good interview on Hard Talk / BBC.Several French media outlets point out that this is the first time in modern French history that a sitting president has decided not to seek a second term in office.

I watched part of this interview yesterday and found his comments on Brexit and EU interesting. It seems like just about everyone on both sides of the pond are scratching their heads about Trump... not much new there.Tony Blair on Trump: ‘Let’s wait and see’ what happens

I just discovered her, French politics having had no relevance to me. I do really like her too.starkmonster wrote:Fuck it, sitting on the fence is boring. I am now officially endorsing Marine Le Pen! Viva Le Pen!

The problem with the world is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I watched this interview, could that reporter show any more disdain? What a fucking pompous asshole. His whole face is scrunched up with a mocking grin.starkmonster wrote:Here's one that's a little more meaty and an interviewer who is pushing back:

The tide is turning for Germany and the growing number of Muslim migrants.German Chancellor Angela Merkel calls for ban on full-face veils and for fewer migrants
Los Angeles TimesOn Tuesday, in a distinct nod to voter angst over an enormous influx of mainly Muslim migrants, the 62-year-old leader for the first time endorsed legal restrictions on face-covering veils in public.
“Here, we show our faces, so full veiling is not appropriate,” the chancellor declared in a policy speech to a party congress that was greeted with sustained applause.
Merkel said bans on coverings such as the burqa and niqab should be enacted “wherever it is legally possible” — measures that would probably include venues such as courtrooms, public schools and universities, together with occasions such as traffic stops and police checks.
