That's what amazes me too. The abuse of language. Anyone who disagrees with a policy they see as unfair is suddenly a 'liberal". All those words become meaningless after a while, they just end up as invective.scobienz wrote: And I'm getting sick and fucking tired that I - a conservative for over thirty years - am lamely labeled a liberal because I happen to find Trump politically and morally objectionable.
Who's worse? HE or Trump - poll

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Exactly - it's thrown around by people like it's an insult. The fact is, most of the people like Jock Jock using it as an insult have no idea what 'liberal' means - they wouldn't know their John Stuart Mill from their fucking John Cougar Mellancamp.Lucky Lucan wrote:That's what amazes me too. I'm not a liberal, although I respect much of classical liberal thinking, particularly around freedom of choice and human rights.
Words change in meaning over time and words take on different meanings in different contexts. In modern times, the word liberal is often times used to refer to an individual with left wing political views. Obviously we aren't talking about John Locke, John Stuart Mill or Adam Smith when we're calling people liberals.
It is no worse than people describing Milo Yiannopolous as "far right" or calling him a "fascist" or a "Nazi."

As Trump wants to spend hundreds of billions on investment, load up on even more debt and pull up the drawbridge of protectionism - all classic left wing economic principles - is it fair to call him a liberal also?
That is the point - using it to belittle his opponents is intellectually vacuous and inaccurate.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... on-ashamed“I voted for you cos I thought maybe it was a good idea to shake things up a bit in politics. Biggest regret of my life!” reads one from this week. “God, I wish I never voted for you. You are a liar. You are ruining the country and the lives of good people. Sad.”
The disenchantment seems to be evenly split into two camps. “You see a lot of people that are just shocked that he’s doing what he said he’s going to do,” she said. Others point to Trump’s blistering rhetoric of the campaign trail and note with dismay “that there’s still Mexicans in the country ”.
I'm not so sure that the republican boys are so worried about Trump. He may have some socialist values, but we've all seen conservative politicians spouting those in the past. He has passed a controversial anti-abortion act, seems to be pro oil and anti environment, he wants to take health care apart, and devalue the dollar. It's a pretty mixed bag, so I'm going for hard-core capitalist myself.
But I can see that he might have somewhat of an idea of an American year zero. But that would just make him a nutter. Usually associated with extreme conservatism. As in the case of Prince Philip.

Left, right, centrist, liberal, conservative, democrat, republican. Can peoples political views change over time? I believe they can. What troubles me is the sense that these labels have ceased to have traditional meanings and morphed into an "us against them" angry, frustrated, polarization that has escalated into violent acts. Will the real Donald Trump please stand up?
Over the past two decades he was a Republican, then an independent, then a Democrat, then a Republican.

Has hasn't passed any 'acts' yet - hastily written (by Bannon) Executive Orders are not laws, and as we have seen over the weekend they have absolutely no power if the judiciary thinks they are illegal.Abou-Gor wrote:

As for the Republican's attitude to him - particularly the likes of Paul Ryan - I think it's amply illustrated in the example cited in a letter to The Economist this week.
In I Claudius, the ageing Emperor marries Nero to his mother Agrippina, hoping that Nero will be so despised that it will lead to a rejection of all future emperors. His strategy was simple: "Let all of the poisons that luck in the mud, hatch out."
