Another great discourse from the Guardian's The Long Read series.
I should think this would be absorbing to those who are interested in (fairly recent) British political history. But I can also see why it is of no interest whatsoever to most posters. Nevertheless, I'd like to put up this article in case any interested readers have any comments. All you can do is put up a piece and see whether anyone has anything interesting to say about it!
Here is an appetiser, which might stimulate the taste buds to some:
Oxford PPE remains opaque to outsiders. It is often mentioned in the media but rarely explained. Even to know what PPE stands for is to be unusually well-informed about British education and power – often, to be part of the same Oxford milieu as the PPEists. When I asked one former party leader what he got from the degree, he said with studied insouciance: “Why would you want to write about PPE?” As the establishment often says when scrutinised: nothing to see here.
For me, this is as close as the dear old Grauniad gets to admitting that it has to be careful in how it says things, but will say them, however covertly, nonetheless.

(Sorry if I've made anyone yawn, but there's always a chance of some interesting feedback!)

I shouldn't think so, but I would like to discuss things of interest face to face if you are willing to.scobienz wrote:Does my degree in Politics, Philosophy and History from Newcastle Poly make me part of this shady elite, springrain?

Nothing would give me greater pleasure, springrain - genuinely - but alas work and a heavy schedule of illuminati meetings has taken me to the old country for the last few months.springrain wrote:I shouldn't think so, but I would like to discuss things of interest face to face if you are willing to.scobienz wrote:Does my degree in Politics, Philosophy and History from Newcastle Poly make me part of this shady elite, springrain?

Never mind, I'm sure there will be no shortage of those willing to lambaste the old prune!
I do find it intriguing, though, that so many of our 'politicians' hail from the dreaming spires, with their freshly-minted scrolls tucked under their arms.

It doesn't seem that odd to me that a disproportionate number of the political class would come from a politics course at one of the two best universities in the country. Similar trends can be seen with senior figures in the arts and civil service coming from both universities also, especially groups like the Apostles, or overseas at the prominent universities in various countries, who's graduates comprise the governing classes.
Why is that so strange? I'm not saying it's good; it's just not that bizarre.
