French election results
Well, it will be Macron and Le Pen on the ballot.
But more interesting are the results from the embassy here:
Résultats Cambodge
1- Macron 353
2- Fillon 295
3- Mélenchon 286
4- Le Pen 155
5- Hamon 86
6- Asselineau 32
7- DuPont Aignan 20
8- Lassalle 14
9- Poutou 11
10- Arthaud 4
11- Cheminade 2
This means that almost one in four French people in Cambodia are communists...

It's easy to be a commie on other people's behalf, and you don't have to live the life yourself. But a bit surprising considering Cambodia's dubious experience with commies.

Melanchon the commie result isn't that surprisising, the guy is smart and a fantastic crowd speaker.
The rest of the candidates including the two front runners had inherent weaknesses.
I am personally glad with the result mainly for pro european reasons.
In two weeks time Macron victory will be synonymous to a loud fuck you to Brexiters and others Trump alike isolationists.

Melanchon against Le Pen would have been fun though.Barang_doa_slae wrote:Melanchon the commie result isn't that surprisising, the guy is smart and a fantastic crowd speaker.

None but ourselves can free our mind.
I also think it's the best possible outcome. Le pen isn't in the lead so she can't claim a victory, and Macron seems to be a pragmatist who's never been tainted with money politics, unlike Fillon who would have been a painful alternative to Le pen.
The main thing is, France (and Europe) escaped the nightmare scenario of a le Pen - Mélenchon run off.

That would probably have meant a Frexit which in the long run would only be a good thing, both for France and the EU.logos wrote:I also think it's the best possible outcome. France is slowly but surely going bankrupt as they simply cant compete in a German run EU.

One of my original points was that it's a little crazy that Mélenchon received 22.73% of the vote from French expats here, well above what he received in France. You'd think expats here would have a different view on Communism (especially considering that a number of those "expats" are probably French-Cambodians themselves).
Another interesting point, for what it's worth, is that 41% of the French here voted (compared to closer to 85% in France).
But to discuss the upcoming election, it's still a little crazy to watch. A lot of French people do not support Le Pen, but as they don't love Macron either, they may just not vote. If enough disenfranchised French do not vote, then that could possibly lead to a Le Pen victory. I'm seeing a lot of debate and criticisms similar to what we saw in the U.S., where Hillary was vilified for relatively small indiscretions, yet Trump got a free pass on unthinkable actions. In France, Macron is critized for having a small event at a modest restaurant, being attacked for elitism over it (and that was not a posh restaurant), while Le Pen can't even dissociate herself from being a Nazi. Another similarity in the elections, not to be missed, are the hacking attempts against Macron, from, guess where, Russia.
Here's a Guardian article to read: Le Pen is a far-right Holocaust revisionist. Macron isn’t. Hard choice?

"The hard-left candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has, as yet, refused to endorse Macron. This is because he needs – in a move that further reduces the hard-left to its own self-parody – to consult the wishes of his supporters first. Yes, that’s right, he absolutely must have a collective debate about whether or not to endorse the candidate who has, as two of her closest advisers, associates of an unrepentant former SS member. Way to maintain the socialist dream!"
"So forgive me if I can’t quite join in on this nose-holding approach to Macron, but some of us can imagine all too easily a France under the sway of a fascist leader, and what the costs of that would be. Sure, criticise Macron’s policies, but to rail against him because of your ideological idea of who he is – a banker, an insider – is the definition of decadence. Lucky you that you aren’t terrified about who – and what – he is running against."
"A week before the US election David Sedaris wrote about undecided American voters, and he compared them to passengers on a plane being presented with their meal options: “‘Can I interest you in the chicken?’ [the flight attendant] asks. ‘Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?’ To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.”
Haha, I love this.A week before the US election David Sedaris wrote about undecided American voters, and he compared them to passengers on a plane being presented with their meal options: “‘Can I interest you in the chicken?’ [the flight attendant] asks. ‘Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?’ To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.”
Yeah, macron's detractors are the delusional kings of selective indignation. Starting with that asshole Mélenchon, a pretend communist who doesn't oppose a Nazi alternative.

I find it laughable that M. Macron is described as a 'centrist' candidate. This bloke is a former Investment Banker. Does anyone really fall for the 'centrist' card? All this means is that the EU will continue its march towards a 'New World Order' whilst pretending to swirl around a 'centrist' May Pole. Meaning, no change.
Yes, I know that he has called for the EU to 'change'. Mr Obama also claimed to represent 'change'.

No, I didn't. I'm just amazed that folk still buy into the clivage droite-gauche nonsense. Which also means that the idea of a 'centrist' candidate is a joke.

Batty, you want to bet $100 on le Pen? Reply before 7:15 pm pp time. If yes, we have a deal. Bets to be left in the bar of your choosing.
I hope you're not only talk, but I'm pretty sure you'll chicken out. We'll see.
