That's what I always assumed would happen in the end. Doesn't look that likely now but one can hope. Don't really see any other outcome... well one other but let's hope notEdwardo wrote:Wouldn't have to be a reunification, just an agreement for mutual co-existence between North and South and a full withdrawal of US forces/bases from the peninsula. No more joint military maneuvers with nuclear-capable B-1 bombers flying overhead as a provocative show of force. Let them deal with their problems and then deal with future consequences of their decisions on their own, regardless of the possible severity of those consequences. Gradual easing of economic sanctions. Should please everybody, except the US chickenhawks who demand to maintain as much military power as possible right on China's doorstep.Alexandra wrote:A united Korea under King Kong rule is mildly put impossible. Of course it won't happen, for foolish politician pride ("He's week on defense!") and the military-industrial complex's stranglehold on US foreign policy. But that is the obvious solution.

Both sides seek total reunification led by themselves. I think it's more likely that there actually are unicorns in the North, as they claim, than them ever agreeing.Edwardo wrote:Wouldn't have to be a reunification, just an agreement for mutual co-existence between North and South and a full withdrawal of US forces/bases from the peninsula.
Besides, the mere existence of the North is alone a great tragedy. They have some of the worst labour camps mankind has ever known. Its population is barely surviving on grass and stone soup. The whole country is in a vegetable state and anything but pulling the plug is inhumane at this stage.

The DPRK exist on a different plane. Very difficult to attack them without ROK getting creamed though.Alexandra wrote: The whole country is in a vegetable state and anything but pulling the plug is inhumane at this stage.

It's worth noting that Japan, USA and S Korea were rehearsing an invasion of N Korea days before it fired a warning shot across the bow. Of course US media is so insular and self absorbed it interprets a country's attempt to defend itself as provocative.

I've known a fair few North Koreans over the years here. They all seemed to be well-nourished, and all were extremely charming. The state control is overwhelming though, and I always kept to professional discussions with them as I didn't want to compromise their security. I tried to buy a Kim Il Sung badge off one guy a few times but he wasn't entertaining the idea.

And where do you get your information that shows otherwise?Barang_doa_slae wrote: Regarding eating earth soup and grass you are giving way too much credit to western propaganda.

Did those N Korean's give any clues as to whether Kim Jong Un is really addicted to cheese then? And he really blew up his uncle with an anti-aircraft gun?Lucky Lucan wrote:I've known a fair few North Koreans over the years here. The NK missile launch yesterday could easily have hit Guam. It flew 2300 miles. Well within range.
This after a successful test of a hydrogen bomb 2 weeks ago. And yet I got repeatedly called a "warmonger" for questioning if this NK behavior should be stopped pre-emptively before it got this far.

You'll get called worse than that on here so don't worry too much.Edwardo wrote:The NK missile launch yesterday could easily have hit Guam. It flew 2300 miles. Well within range.

Surely, but since there are only about 2 posts a week these days (not counting the batshit thread embarrassment), it may take a while.Nasty Canasta wrote:You'll get called worse than that on here so don't worry too much.Edwardo wrote:The NK missile launch yesterday could easily have hit Guam. Back on topic, CNN just showed a new one hour special on a reporter's visit to NK. The interviews are bizarre. A 9 year old looking boy saying "The leader loves me and cares for me more than my own parents", while he eats with other young students at tables packed senseless with heaps of exotic food as a "typical school lunch in North Korea". Reminds me of another NK report a few years ago when a reporter was shown "a typical internet cafe" in NK. He was shown a room with 50 people sitting in silence at 50 computers. All the computer monitors showed the Google home screen. All the people just stared at the screen as if they were reading something. No clicking, no talking, no typing. Just staring at the Google home page for the entire 20 minutes the reporter was taking the tour.
