And with the push for tax cuts it's clear these same people want nothing to derail the fragile recovery since the GFC, and trip up corporate America in any way.
Maybe in a way inequality go's hand in hand with loose gun control?

The funny thing is most synagogues in large cities have had armed security for a few decades now because of antisemetism and nothing is said about that.Miguelito wrote:Well this took the predictable 48 hours to be said:
"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) views the deadliest mass shooting in his state’s history as evidence that more church parishioners should carry guns for self-protection."

And for the record I fully support mass shootings as well as the right to murder babies up to the moment of birth...and even later term abortions if the kid is a real puke.

Why would anything be said about it? What’s the relevance? How many of the mass shootings in US history have been done by synagogue security guards or any security guard come to that?
And why bring up synagogues when you could as easily have used federal buildings or banks or a multitude of other examples where armed guards are necessary?

Ah yes, Migs, let us all band together in between our full time jobs, family and friends and go take on one of the most powerful American lobby groups, the NRA.

It’s crocodile tears over and over again. Enough horrific events have happened to justify radical change but there is clearly no appetite.

Did you enjoy Optimism 401?
Well, we can't compare to the White dude born in Zimbabwe or South Africa or wherever you were spawned. Especially one that goes on to become a lifelong TEFL teacher in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Nobody needs to 'take on the NRA' - the NRA and any other lobby group only have as much power as the politicians give them, or to the extent they are funded by them. There need be no conflict with the NRA - it's simply a question of a country's political leaders having the collective will to change legislation.
Your later posts about being anti-American are silly. It's not anti-American to look in bemused confusion at US political leaders performing verbal gymnastics to avoid talking about or doing anything about gun laws after every single mass shooting, which are becoming more and more common. If anything, it's the reverse. It's a respect of America and Americans that makes sane outsiders think - what the fuck is wrong with your system that allows this shit to happen, when every other advanced democracy around the world has managed to deal with it.
I was talking to an American yesterday. He said the single thing holding America back is the fact that so few Americans have been overseas and think the world ends at the borders of the country; he believes his people simply don't know what normal is anymore. He made a good point.

If you look at the actually spending of the NRA it is paltry compared to other industries. The combined gun lobby isn't even in the list of top 20 in spending. Republicans aren't beholden to the NRA for their money, but rather for their ability to rally the base.Miguelito wrote:

Let's face it, if most of s non Yanks were Yanks, we'd have a gun or 3 either because we pretend we need security, or honestly just because
A) we could
B) guns are fucking cool
I was armed to the teeth with air rifles, which, although good fun, were hardly gangster reppin'

If by anti ‘American stuff’ you mean your current president or the ridiculous gun laws then yes, I’m guilty. However, I suspect my views are shared by a very significant number of sensible people.DetroitMuscle wrote:How so? I don't feel terror? You don’t feel terror?
Maybe that’s part of the problem. It’ll never happen to you or your loved ones...until it does.

I also think that people can express dislike for aspects of the U.S. (President, gun laws, weird cultures like tipping 20%), but not be "Anti American", just as people can express their confusion and dislike for certain aspects of Cambodian society and the country as a whole, but still be very much pro Cambodia and not anti-Cambodia.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:If by anti ‘American stuff’ you mean your current president or the ridiculous gun laws then yes, I’m guilty. You can look or their spending (which I'm sure includes their bribes) or you can look at facts. The NRA is one of the most powerful organizations in the US. They overwhelming affect anti-gun legislation. If they can achieve this with a small budget, that's even more of a testimony to how powerful they are.
