India monsoon floods 'kill more than 300' in Kerala
At least 324 people have been killed in flooding in the southern Indian state of Kerala, local officials say.
The country's monsoon season started in June, but the state's death toll has soared in the last 24 hours, as the region is overwhelmed by flood waters.
Rescuers are battling torrential rains to save residents, with more than 200,000 people left homeless in camps.
The state government said many of those who died were crushed under debris caused by landslides.
With more rains predicted and a red alert in place, Kerala's main airport is expected to remain shut until 26 August.
Hundreds of troops have been deployed to rescue those caught up in the flooding.
Helicopters have been airlifting people marooned by the flooding to safety, with photographs and footage emerging from the area showing elderly people and children being rescued.

More than 300 boats are also involved in rescue attempts, AFP news agency reports.
The government has urged people not to ignore evacuation orders, and is distributing food to tens of thousands who have fled to higher ground.
The Indian home ministry says more than 930 people have now died across India since the country's monsoon season began.

Quite a death toll. 930 deaths from the monsoon so far this season. Just about any other place on earth so many dead from a natural disaster would be front page news for days and days. But because it's India such loss of life is expected and barely gets a mention.

It is front page news internationally so I'm not sure what your point is.

Of course you're going to see results if you google it. Even I posted today's story from BBC.com. But did you know of the 930 dead so far this monsoon season before I posted it and you researched it? They didn't all die yesterday. The death toll has been climbing for several months. It sure hasn't been highlighted in any major way on the mainstream western media channels until now, and it's hardly been making the regular "headlines".
And it's because this isn't an unusual year. Many more died there from the monsoon flooding last year and previous years. As I wrote, because it's only India it's expected and nobody is particularly alarmed by such a horrendous annual human death toll.
64 Puerto Ricans died directly from Hurricane Maria and that story was headline news literally everyday for months.

I completely get your point about the coverage of the deaths in India, and don’t mean to take away from that.McPhisto wrote:64 Puerto Ricans died directly from Hurricane Maria and that story was headline news literally everyday for months.
But it’s crazy that the actual number of deaths in PR is now above 1,400, and that the 64 number was just a ruse to keep media coverage down.
It's not that clear cut. It depends how you classify the PR deaths. Those 1400 dead in PR are loosely "attributed to the hurricane and the aftermath". The vast majority of those deaths included in that 1400 number came many weeks or months after the actual hurricane and were mostly very elderly people whose deaths came from a myriad of things, like having trouble breathing in the hot, humid weather without air conditioning due to the prolonged lack of electricity. It's difficult to really attest to how many of those elderly people would have died in that same timeframe without the hurricane. Some people try to inflate the hurricane death toll in PR as a weapon to sue the US government for compensation and bash/shame/embarrass Trump for a piss-poor national response and bad leadership. Those deaths are no less tragic, but there is a difference.Miguelito wrote:I completely get your point about the coverage of the deaths in India, and don’t mean to take away from that.McPhisto wrote:64 Puerto Ricans died directly from Hurricane Maria and that story was headline news literally everyday for months.

The death tolls reported in India are from drowning in the floods caused directly by the heavy monsoon rains.

inflating figures hey! how despicable. i think these characters actually do have some credibility :
People evacuated from rooftops as Kerala floods kill hundreds
Stranded people moved to 1,200 camps as heavy rains kill 164, pushing overall death toll during monsoon season to 324.
