It's the day you have fisticuffs with your brothers, to stop them stealing your gifts.

Without using google, and purely off the top of me head, I think it has something to do with the church.opening the poor boxes, in which money was collected over xmas and giving alms to the parish poor.

Most common in old Commonwealth countries
Often workers who didn't usually see consumers (milkmen, garbage collectors, municipal workers) often would knock on doors in Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanganyika, SA, etc, and ask for Christmas Box, often cash, but frequently decent leftovers (food/drinks) from Christmas Day.
Most families gave their domestic servants a Christmas Box of sugar/maize flour, tea, household groceries, biscuits etc., kind of a yearly bonus

It's more of a master/servant thing.

The European tradition, which has long included giving money and other gifts to those who were needy and in service positions, has been dated to the Middle Ages, but the exact origin is unknown. It is believed to be in reference to the Alms Box placed in areas of worship to collect donations to the poor. Also, it may come from a custom in the late Roman/early Christian era, wherein metal boxes placed outside churches were used to collect special offerings tied to the Feast of Saint Stephen,[11] which in the Western Church falls on the same day as Boxing Day.
