75 years since Bomber Harris' Dresden firebombing
War crime, or necessary evil? Imagine being one of the poor buggers caught up in that ay?

An event that is being exploited by the far right in Germany; using figures that were put out by the Nazis in the first place; floating figures of 250,000+ dead. These figures have long been corrected. Expect marches from both the right and left this weekend.

A very different time when civilian casualties weren't as well considered as in today's warfare (even now with inevitable casualties despite 'precision' bombing). Back then it was all about "breaking the spirit", the same as raids on London & beyond the other way, admittedly nowhere near the scale of Dresden or Hamburg, etc. Likewise bombs back then were not precise at all, so what choice did airforces have but to drop a shedload of bombs and hope some of it hit the military targets.
Given the timing, I think it was unnecessary, the war was already effectively over - you could argue the same however for the two atomic bombs, USA alone would have eventually overthrown Japan island by island, but chose to shock the world and thus potentially save as many lives as were killed.
War is hell.

I've seen a few neo types get riled up and violent about this after downing a few. But afaik, the invasion of Poland came many years before. Truly saddening for the amazing architecture destroyed, and the loss of innocent civilian life. Never again you might say, but it seems many of the younger generations are ready for another racist/religious conflict. Luckily we now live in the information age, so harder for a despot to gain control of a large nation like that again. oh wait..

By today's woke standards it surely qualifies as a war crime, but back then and considering how close the Brits had come to annihilation, it wasn't an unreasonable thing to do.

The poor Germans, what did they do to deserve such terrible treatment?

The German should be still paying reparations to the British Polish and Russians.
Fuck the Americans they made enough money selling arms to both sides.

The war probably wouldn't have taken place if England didn't ally with Poland. The UK forced Hitler's hand ,and maybe he would have just reunite the lands taken from them in the first world war and that would be the end of it.
Hitler was able to spread his wings because of the useless French.
The French wouldn't fight the English couldn't.

Do you mean the blacks who were the slaves, or the blacks who sold the black slaves to the traders ??pedros wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 7:29 pmAaaaand next week on over simplification of history channel 'slavery: how the blacks are really to blame'Fred Edwards wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 7:06 pmThe war probably wouldn't have taken place if England didn't ally with Poland. As I remember it, the whole firestorm thing was just a theory that they wanted to put into practice to see if it would work. It worked. Definitely a war crime of horrendous dimensions.

I don't think it was much of a theory. It was a fact observed during the London blitz and amongst places.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 10:11 amAs I remember it, the whole firestorm thing was just a theory that they wanted to put into practice to see if it would work. So, how would you describe the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima?
