excerpt:
"Sonam Rinchen, then in his twenties, died in 1999 after part of his body was paralysed as a result of torture. Two members of the group, Thubten Yeshe and Lhundrub, are still in prison in Tibet serving 15 years. Thubten Yeshe was described by the authorities at the trial as being ‘fundamentally bad’ because he had painted a Tibetan national ‘snow lion’ flag on his door. "

Three sentences. Three mistakes.hanky wrote:Thats a pretty old story. I hope you aren't going to start constantly posting ant-Chinese stuff like you used to on tales of asia. Anyway, Tibet has always been part of China.

MISTAKE NUMBER TWO: ... constantly posting ant-Chinese stuff like you used to on tales of asia.
MISTAKE NUMBER THREE: Tibet has always been part of China.

Wiltshire,
That was one filppant answer...,
Hanky, Tibet was never part of China, it was an indpendent country with a seperate culture and belief system until China occupied it.
Putting that aside, it's seems impossible to change the tide, occupation has occoured, and china is not leaving, it has invested to much money, energy and face in trying to prove to the western world that it's claims are legal.
Indoneasia did the the same to East Timor 30 yrs ago - But East Timor became a seperate legal identity 6 yrs ago.
Funny thing about East Timor is that it has a massive wealth in natural gas, but Tibet only has lots and lots of rocks.
So Tibet gets to stay Chinese.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Comparing East TImor with Tibet just can't be done. East Timor had help from many gorvernments in gaining independence. Most notably, Australia supplied the logistics for independence after a multi-billion dollar natural gas deal was signed. Even if Tibet had oil, and lots of it, who would stand up to China?

Actually Tibet first became part of the Mongol Empire at the time of Genghis Khan kicking the snot out of the Chinese. So I guess Mongolia has a more valid claim to ownership. It was independent off and on up until the time Mao decided they needed the glorious vision of Marxism. The CIA did sponsor and train a resistance movement in the early 50s to little effect.
You're right Hanky, states that are "too insular" and only take care of domestic affairs and do not engage or interfere with other nations should be conquered and occupied.hanky wrote:Tibet was independant, for about 21 years, after the turmoil of the republican revolution. It failed to do anything about it though, and could have at least tried to get some backing from the Un or whatever, but was too insular and backward to do so. Now its part of China forever.
Let's impose our culture and take over those unsociable bastards, Bhutan and Micronesia next! Cheeky cunts.
