Twitter loses patience with Trump
Hot on the heels of Twitter fact-checking a Trump tweet over the weekend and Trump's threat to close down social media, Twitter has just censured a tweet from Trump which, it says, glorifies violence.
Trump tweeted about the Minnesota riots to the effect that if rioters dont stop looting, they can expect shooting.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There are some who think Twitter has been too lenient on his posts in the past (his posts re the Joe Scarborough come to mind), and there will be others who rail about freedom of speech.
Either way, he isnt going to be happy when he wakes up.

I don't agree with Trump here, but I also don't agree with Twitter's selective censorship of many of it's users.
Because: (and I'm quoting here)
"Fact checking makes you a publisher. Selectively fact checking makes you a biased publisher. Platforms that engage in this behavior are not neutral and should not be shielded from having to take responsibility for the content on their platform. You can't have it both ways."
But Jack tries to have it both ways.

"When the looting starts, the shooting starts"
Amazing that he thought it was the appropriate comment. That is going to ratchet up the rioting, perhaps that is what he wants. He can make the rioting a democrat state issue that he needs to come in and save the day.

I don't care what Trump says, Twitter has to choose, publisher or platform. Right now they have crossed the line to publisher.

Is there any line that Twitter should not allow to be crossed by people using its platform? Or should all content be allowed to go through unfiltered?Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 5:08 pmI don't care what Trump says, Twitter has to choose, publisher or platform. you cannot fact check one person and allow millions to post lies and repost lies.
plus, who is fact checking? Where do you find an independent expert who can fact check at internet speed?
People have been making all kinds of claims on twitter for years that turned out to be lies.
twitter ...google... facebook all need to lose their protection..
they have crossed the line for years and are no longer platforms.
The police need to restore order.
The Mayor must act..
If not, the Governor must call in the National Guard.
It is something for the locals to deal with.
It sure as hell is not a time for law enforcement to stand back and watch shit burn.

As a mod, what in your opinion is 440? Platform or publisher?
When content was previously filtered or removed, it was still a platform. Only NOW they have just become a publisher. Very clear indeed.Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 5:53 pmI'm not devolving into how many angels dance on the head of a pin. If Twitter - and 440 for that matter - are deemed publishers because they make decisions about what can be posted and what can't (and I dont have enough legal knowledge to make that call) then it has very severe repercussions for the owners and moderaters of both. And every social media site, forum, etc,
If they are deemed publishers, then they are legally responsible for everything that is posted on them. I hope you all have deep pockets

I have said this for years both regarding Twitter and Facebook. There is nothing sudden about this, only now the environment has become so toxic that most tech giants have dropped all pretense. Time for everyone to take a big breath and observe the lanes in the road again.GMJS-440 wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 6:17 pmWhen content was previously filtered or removed, it was still a platform. Since we are Cambodia based and many posters, etc., live in Cambodia, I don't worry about US laws regarding platforms and publishers. We have a unique set of circumstances here, so your question is a straw man and not applicable.scobienz wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 6:14 pmFelgerkarb wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 5:08 pmI don't care what Trump says, Twitter has to choose, publisher or platform. I don't think it's as simple as that. I'm not sure what the sitution is now, but I'm pretty sure we used to be hosted in the US, which would definitely bring you under the legislation. We certainly used GoDaddy. Many other countries have Section 230 legislation also - definitely the EU and Australia. No doubt many more.
Besides, being Cambodia based and having posters who live in Cambodia seems irrelevant. In fact, it increases your liability. If your argument is that being Cambodia based excludes you from US legislation, then you're effectively saying you don't have 230 protection.
Which opens up a whole can of worms.
