Never liked the guy much, or football for that matter, but I guess he was a pretty good player when he did not cheat.

The best of my generation. Loved watching him, would stay up all hours to see him play.Hanno wrote: ↑Thu Nov 26, 2020 5:58 amNever liked the guy much, or football for that matter, but I guess he was a pretty good player when he did not cheat.

The cheating thing...What most people forget is that he was subjected to appalling treatment by the english players during match. If played nowadays there would be at least 3 players sent off for fouls on him alone and terry Fenwick would have been sent off 3 times by himself. He was blatantly elbowed several times before the 'goal'... i always wondered if he led with his arm to protect himself from an almost inevitable collision with goalkeeper.
The english players got up to so much shithousery in that game they were complete hypocrites to call Maradona a cheat.
Ok, so it was the England players fault that he cheated. I always wondered why he displayed such poor sportsmanship; now I know, thank you.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Thu Nov 26, 2020 8:05 pmThe best of my generation. Yeah, he cheated and the running away holding his hand up to the crowd was a tad naughty. But imo due to the mitigating circumstances I don't think it was as bad as English media portrayed. Its played up to distract from the fact that England were deservedly beaten by the Argies and they just couldn't cope with Maradona.
Thierry Henry did the same thing against ireland and that goal was the games decisive goal but the cheat narrative isn't used against him continually. Its an interesting difference.

He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!
The consensus is, he was 'a flawed genius'.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 9:24 amNot quite what i said, but ok.kinard wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 1:09 amOk, so it was the England players fault that he cheated.
