I’m a bit confused why Trump is banging on about repealing Section 230. I know he’s pissed off with social media flagging his tweets, but surely if 230 is repealed it would mean the end to his social media presence entirely. Twitter would simply remove his posts for fear that they would be sued for his content.
What am I missing here?
Section 230
Revenge, revenge, revenge. Trumpie in his hay days is on a destructive course, scourge the earth, just to "prove" everybody is wrong to kick him out.scobienz wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 2:35 pmI’m a bit confused why Trump is banging on about repealing Section 230. Why do you think, he is pushing for the USD 2000 ? That'll serve the Democrats and as such put the conquer-and-divide in the Senate more on fire. Though it looks like McConnell tackled that with a poison pill approach. Apart from the practical fact that this USD 2000 per person does largely go to those who did not lose any income in 2020. On top of that, it'll hugely increase the federal debt and light up inflation as a further result.
Yup. Can’t say I think the 2000 per person is a very good policy. As you say it will go mostly to those who don’t need it.
That still doesn’t explain why he is insisting on 230 reform. Haven’t his advisers explained what it would mean for him personally?

230 shields media companies like 440 from liability arising from content provided by others.
Trump alleges bias by FB et al against conservatives influenced the outcome of the elections, so he wants platforms to be held to the same account as publishers.
This would destroy most social media in US jurisdiction and spark a wholesale exodus of tech firms to friendlier climes.
His usual infantile revenge rage tantramic behavior with no regard for consequences.
Mitch has already said that 230, the $2k payment and further election fraud investigations will be linked in any further action by the senate.
So he will save the R senators from having to vote against Trump on the $2k by linking the items, providing senators with an excuse for down voting this popular measure.
I think they will lose the balance of power in the senate due to this.

Facebook would be a better example. Khmer440 is not in US jurisdiction.chkai chgout wrote: ↑Wed Dec 30, 2020 4:21 pm230 shields media companies like 440 from liability arising from content provided by others.
I’m still confused. Is the answer simply that he doesn’t understand what 230 is and what repealing it would mean for his own social media presence.
We need great intellects like convoluted to explain it to us.

A lack of understanding or foresight has not given him pause up until now though he seems clever in wreaking havoc, especially among his sycophants.
It is like a grandiose comic opera.

Given that limiting liability of companies, fiscal responsibility and de-centralising power are Republican core values, the '230' issue, $2,000 payments and attempt to federalise election procedures all are forcing Republican members of congress to choose between values or personality. To chose the former risks the public ire of an individual for whom many voters feel is the party.
The 230 issue may have nothing to do with social media and everything to do with moulding the GOP around Trump.
McConnell is well aware of this and thus far is doing his best to drag things out so such "loyalty test" votes can be avoided. Unfortunately for him such a "test" has been manufactured for the 6th of January.
