Brits in Spain facing Brexit deportation
Brits in Spain facing Brexit deportation
Hundreds of Brits living the expat dream in Spain face deportation back to the UK on 31 March, for either failing to apply for resident status or being rejected. This is a result of the Brexit vote which, candidly, many of them voted for.

"Expat Shaun Cromber, who voted Leave in 2016, told Global247News : "The wife is in tears, she’s distraught if I’m honest and I’m not too happy at the prospect of returning back to the UK.
"I’ve loved living on the Costa del Sol and after five years... we applied but got rejected and so have no choice, although long term I think the Spanish will regret chucking us out of Spain."
Anthony Cook, meanwhile, is heading back to Cardiff, telling the outlet the "Spanish dream is over for me".
"I don’t have enough credentials to become a resident, it was so easy before, get your funds in from the UK, do a bit of cash in hand around the likes of Benidorm and bob was your uncle, but that’s all changed now," he added."
You can hear the cries of anguish as expat Brits who voted for the end of freedom of movement find themselves victims of the end of freedom of movement.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't for the wider implications to others.
Turkeys voting for Christmas indeed.

it's not the only example. UK news has been full of stories of the woes of the UK fishing sector recently, as Brexit supporting fishermen suddenly find out that their industry has been decimated by the new rules applying to the UK (as a non-EU member) trying to export their catch to the EU, virtually its only market for the last century or so.

Noone told us we would have to fill in papers and pay duties sending out catch to Europe, they say.
Well, actually, yes we did. Over and over again.
It's doubly ironic because the fishing sector was one of the hills upon with Brexit one, a tiny industry but one that took on huge symbolic resonance in the debate. Of course, it was a stupid debate. The UK fisherman catch fish the Brits tend not to eat, so it has to be exported. Meanwhile, the main fish we eat - cod and haddock etc - has to be imported from . . . guess where?

Whilst I feel sorry for the folks that get kicked out, this was an obvious consequence. Like other nationalities, I assume that British expatriates tend to be more on the conservative side and that many of those voted for Brexit without thinking it through.

Could be a great opportunity to score a cheap condo on the coast, sea views, warmer than uk, bars, eastern european chancers and cannabus club membership.

They will be needing all those expats homes to house their ever-increasing population of illegal immigrants coming across from Africa.
I'm glad we're out of Europe, and why don't you move over there if you like it so much Scob?
P.s. you've lost your common touch

I wanted to apply for an emergency extension or a visa due to unforeseen circumstances ( covid ) and was advised to go to the local police station. Where without any fuss ( they knew all about me having given me a hard time during the first lockdown whenever I left the villa, and were also aware that my bike had been stolen after the lockdown ended ) they entered my details into the computer and told me to return seven days later. When I returned they printed out a few sheets of paper which gave me temporary Spanish Residency for one year. No fuss, no drama and even better no cost!
So I now have two options: stay here or return to Cambodia ( I was notified a few days ago that my visa had been granted and that my passport was with DHL and I should get it back this week) .

There are loads of apartments, villas, country cottages for sale all over Spain. 50% of the apartments in this small town on the Costa Tropical are for rent or sale. There are two big construction sites building even more apartments. However, one looks like it has stopped building permanently and the other is going up at a snail's pace with only a couple of workman on site. Up in the Sierras one can buy run down farms complete with olive groves or almond plantations for 75,000 euros, only catch is that the buildings have no running water, nor are they connected to the grid. They are also in need of complete renovation but cannot be knocked down as the local laws require them to be rebuilt in the local style with traditional wood n stone structures.Big one wrote: ↑Mon Mar 29, 2021 6:09 pmCould be a great opportunity to score a cheap condo on the coast, sea views, warmer than uk, bars, eastern european chancers and cannabus club membership.
