Is that like a pity-fuck because we lost all the other games?

Bloody 'ell, Sterling nearly went from hero to zero in the space of a few minutes - that dreadful back pass that let in Muller, only for him to shoot wide.
A rising England beat a fading Germany.
Bring it on!

I read an article last week which said the England/Germany rivalry is only a thing for the English. The Germans are somewhat bemused by the attention from the English side.
Matches against Netherlands and Italy are much more of a rivalry for Germans.
Maybe Hanno can comment more accurately here.
The author reckoned it’s partially because England have been fairly rubbish over the past 50 years or so and haven’t really been particularly relevant to the Germans.
Saying that, the match last night was between two average teams, neither are part of Europe’s elite right now.

Don’t watch it.
I used to watch the World Cup as a teen/early 20s in the pub. Great atmosphere but I watched the heartache and wondered why the English bother.
Could be worse. The Scots and Welsh are dire, but the Welsh love rugby (Union not the other game) so.
Met a shit load of soccer players but I’d no idea who they were and only knew who they played for if I was at their training ground. Arsenal in London Conley mainly.

Agreed, the German team is on the wane and has been for years. The German coach, Löw, has been around for too long and has become to cautious and conservative. This was his last match, let’s see what the new coach can do.
And yes, matches with England were never as anticipated as with other teams where the rivalry is much stronger. Let’s face it: England might have the best league in the world, but as a national team they suck and only sucked a little less than Germany on this occasion.

Germans never really get themselves worked up about anything in my opinion and it's only been in the last 20-years that they've become nationalistic and got behind the German flag. Beforehand it had too many reminders of the past and people were wary of being nationalistic.Hanno wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 12:09 pmAgreed, the German team is on the wane and has been for years. I've watched two games England Germany fixtures in Germany and the rivalry was strong.

I would agree with you on that, it has become very nationalistic in the last couple of decades. When I was young, waving a German flag was a big no no. Admittedly, I haven’t been to a Bundesliga match for ages, seeing how I have been in this part of the world for the last 26 years. And I only ever follow football for the big tournaments, being more of a rugger man myself.Fred Edwards wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 6:36 pmGermans never really get themselves worked up about anything in my opinion and it's only been in the last 20-years that they've become nationalistic and got behind the German flag. I didn't even bother watching the game. My brit neighbor said it was a real boring game till the very last minutes. I would watch it again IF all players really are citizens of the country they play for but this money driven football prostitution just doesn't get me excited.
