Ive only just picked up the story, but it's very satisfying to see some movement at last in the Armed forces in relation to diversity. I wish him all the best for the future. God bless him.
A FISHERMAN’S son from Jamaica is set to become the first black Regimental Sergeant Major in the Queen’s elite bodyguards.
Kirtland Gill, 40, will be the most senior enlisted soldier in the Coldstream Guards when officially promoted next year.

Only commissioned officers will rank higher. The dad of one told The Sun: “It will be challenging but I wouldn’t want it any other way.
“It is an honour and it doesn’t come with colour or creed. It is something you need to achieve.
“I grew up in a small family. My mum is a dressmaker and my dad a fisherman. I wasn’t well off, where I could go to the top schools.”
Sgt Maj Gill joined on a whim after meeting a recruiting sergeant on a 2001 visit to London.
He added: “Being 20 I thought if I did four years and didn’t like it I’d still be young and get on with life.”
Instead he fell in love with the Army and even persuaded his brother Ryan to join.
'OVERWHELMED'
In 2005 Sgt Maj Gill served in Iraq where two of his unit were killed. In 2007 he was a section commander in Afghanistan.
He rates it a highlight, adding: “It’s where you have the opportunity to put into practise all the things you’ve trained to do.”
He later instructed at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
His promotion will also make him the first black RSM in the Household Division, which guards Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
As the colonel’s right-hand man he will be responsible for administering the 500-strong regiment including Number 7 Company which parades in the red tunics and bearskins during State visits.
Sgt Maj Gill has met the Queen twice, first at a Westminster Abbey memorial service in 2003 when he admits to being “overwhelmed”.

He met her again in 2012, when she presented the regiment with a ceremonial flag at Windsor Castle.
He is a hero in Jamaica, saying: “I remember the first time I went back in 2004 everyone was happy. They said you’ve gone away, you have done something with your life.
“I’d encourage any young kid to join the Army. The sky’s the limit. It inspires people to fulfil their potential.”

Sorry what do you mean "At last some movement"? There are folks from various backgrounds from Sikhs to Gurkhas who have served over a hundred years ago in the British Army, many with Victoria Crosses for their efforts through the ages. Sure there's always a "First" for somebody, but not exactly staggering news to me honestly speaking. Good luck to him all the same.

Well I never I don't know what to think. My tiny racist brain cannot keep up. I was so extremely happy to find out about this individual who was fast tracked into a position of responsibility with minimal qualifications and experience ahead of many other suitable candidates, when I came across this story this morning.Spigzy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 9:18 pmSorry what do you mean "At last some movement"? Two serving members of the army have been charged with firearms offences after being accused of trying to sell ammunition.
Kirtland Gill, 40, the most senior enlisted soldier in the Coldstream Guards, was arrested earlier this year following an investigation by Metropolitan Police Flying Squad and Royal Military Police.
Gill has now been charged with one count of conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.
The second charge relates to an imitation firearm capable of discharging noxious liquid, officers said.
Meanwhile, Rajon Graham, 32, is accused of one count of conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition, and four counts of selling or transferring ammunition

Diversity in the armed forces ?
I ran into quite a number of ex-military guy's mostly from Britain and the US and some less from Aussieland. What most of them had in common was that they retired at an age which would have allowed them to start a completely new, different life. Another thing that mostly American ex- military guys had was that they where proud that their father, grandfather and grandgranfather did service in the military aswell. i.e. Killing People professional as a family proud heritage.
The now retired folks that i met in thailand, vietnam and cambodia mostly ended up being lost in the world without military order. Most became alcohol or drug addicts while the other half still kept their "next Mission preparedness" on their sleeve which meant to work as a mercinary, security or banana republic military advisor.
The infamous "Blackwater" US mercinary now relabeled as "Academi" demonstrated the world what kind of lawless guntoting idiots were let loose on the world. The recent event in Haiti where the PM was shot and killed by "foreign mercinaries" demonstrates why ex army personal is a liability. Now you got South American competing with brits, us and aussie retirees. Latin Americans charge a fraction of what U.S. or British ex-soldiers do, even when they are earning up to four times their old military salaries, McFate wrote in a 2019 report.
