Ukraine
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
According to Ukrainian media outlet Hromadske, Russian Telegram channels have shared photos of the aftermath of an attack at a base in Popasna in the Luhansk region.
The photos show injured or dead soldiers being taken out from under the rubble as well as the destruction of the building. The official number of injured and deceased has not been confirmed, however.
The base was attacked on Sunday and was occupied by the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary force fighting in Ukraine.
Yuriy Kotenok, a Russian propagandist, wrote on Telegram that Ukraine had used HIMARS to target the Wagner Group, according to a report by Daily Kos. However, Ukrainian forces have not confirmed whether this was the case.
Ukraine became aware of the base's location after Russian war correspondent Serhiy Sreda came to the base on August 8, according to the Hromadske report.
Sreda published a photo showing that the paramilitary force had set up a base in a residential building, referring to it as the group's "headquarters." One of the photos showed a sign with the address of the nearest bomb shelter, Myronivska Street, 12.
Russian chef and Vladimir Putin confidante Yevgeny Prigozhin is also visible in one of the photos with Sreda, however it has not been confirmed whether he was at the base during the time of the attack
The Russian Telegram channel Radio Liberty also confirmed the strike and also noted that Sreda has since deleted his post, but it still remains available on other Telegram channels.

End of Week 25 of the Russo-Ukrainian War and whilst there have been significant strikes behind lines there has been little change of territory on the ground.
To the West and North there was no change. There were explosions reported at a Belarus airbase used by the Russians and also reports of large amounts of Russian missiles being transported to airbases in the South of the country. The speculation is these will be used for a large strike on August 24 which is Ukraine’s independence day and, coincidentally, exactly 6 months of the current stage of the conflict.
Around Kharkiv the level of shelling has increased however there have been no changes on the ground.
In the Donbas, Russian forces made minor gains towards Bakhmut and Ukraine made minor gains North of Slovyansk. Forces from the Donetsk Peoples Republic may have broken through the long-established front near Donetsk at a town called Pisky. The Wagner HQ at Popasna was destroyed after an operational security failure involving a miliblogger.
On the Zaporizhzhia front there have been no reported changes with concerns regarding the nuclear power plant remaining high. The IAEA continue to demand access and has thus far been denied, though pressure is mounting. Partisans continue to be active around Melitopol, damaging a railway bridge and related infrastructure during the week.
In Kherson there has been continued degradation of the three bridges supplying the region. Russia made two attempts to regain the initiative through offensives but were unsuccessful. There have been no major changes in regards to territorial control.
In Russian controlled Crimea attacks on air facilities, ammunition dumps and railway infrastructure continued during the week. It remains unclear as to how the Ukrainians are conducting these attacks so deep into Russian controlled territory.
For a change I’ve posted a graph showing territorial control between the start of the invasion and August 10th (not sure of the source).

Yesterday in Moscow there was an assassination of an ultra-nationalist, Darya Dugina, a victim of a bomb planted under her father's car. Speculation is that the intended target was her father, the extremist Aleksander Dugin. Whilst bloggers on both sides are quick to attribute the blast to the Russo-Ukrainian War, and extolling rage or delight as they see fit, official media is somewhat more circumspect.
Aleksander Dugin's extremism made him a fringe element in Russian political life (he was a more influental figure a decade or so earlier) and his daughter, whilst strident in her opinions, was relatively unkown. Neither were high value targets in the context of the war.
An article from Russia Today sums up the situation.

Recruitment for men aged 18 to 60 years begins
The town of Volosovo, near St Petersburg, is booming. Not the economy - it's the loudspeakers.
Like many towns in Russia, Volosovo has them installed on tall poles that line the main street. Traditionally they are used for playing patriotic music during national holidays. Now, though, they have a different purpose.
"Two volunteer artillery battalions are being formed. We invite men from 18 to 60 years old to join," the speakers blare out. ...

Force generation is a real issue for Russia. Wagner are recruiting in prisons and as you noted, age restrictions for volunteer battalions have largely been discarded. This is compounded by the ability of existing soldiers to not renew their contracts as according to domestic law Russia is not at war (though incidents of troops being unable to leave Ukraine when their contracts expire are well publicised).
Russia is getting new troops, but their quality and quantity is less than those they are replacing.

End of Week 26 of the Russo-Ukrainian War which marks 6 months since Russian tanks crossed the border from Belarus. It also marks Ukraine Indepence Day.
To the West and North there was no change. There was an expectation of a missile barrage from Belarus territory today, though as of writing this has not occured. There were explosions in Belgorod (Russia) which the Russian authorities attributed to the effect of high temperatures on exposed ammunition dumps.
Around Kharkiv there was no change.
In the Donbas, Russian forces made minor gains in their move towards Bahkmut. There was little change along the rest of the front with some small gains made by Russian backed forces near Donetsk.
On the Zaporizhzhia front there have been no reported changes.
In Kherson there was an attack West of Sihurnivka as Russia attempted to regain the initiative in this theatre. There were some minor gains with one village partially taken, though at the same time Ukraine reportedly made minor gains from their bridgehead across the Inhulets River. The three bridges into the region continue to be degraded.
In Russian controlled Crimea attacks on military & logistical infrastructure continued, including attacks on military airfields.

Russia fights better defensive wars than offensive ones.
Maybe Vlad P. didn't get the memo.

The Russian emphasis on "demilitarization" reminds me of General Westmoreland's Vietnam body count and crossover point.

It is reported the Russian 3rd Army Corps is moving towards the Ukraine border. The 3rd Army Corp only formed a couple of months ago, so the soldiers will be lightly trained and have a dearth of experienced officers. A number of the regional volunteer units were reportedly incorporated into the 3rd Army Corps, which may boost numbers to the advertised 15,000.
They appear to be better equipped than many units currently engaged in Ukraine, with reports of them training with modern armour (T-80BVM & T-90 tanks) and infantry fighting vehicles (BMP-3s). It remains to be seen if they retain this equipment or if it is passed on to more experienced, combat effective units.
A signals unit from the 3rd Army is deploying to Kherson, which suggests this may be their destination, though Donetsk is also being speculated upon.

I read that the new army formations are created from men with previous military experience. So not untrained, but probably fairly old. I expect their job will be to guard the territories already under control, to free up men for more offensive operations.

Reports are coming in that Ukraine is on the move in Kherson.
It is unclear if this is the beginning of the ground phase of their counter-offensive or a localised success by Ukrainian forces that is being built upon.

End of Week 27 of the Russo-Ukrainian War saw Putin reportedly taking a more active role with Russian sources reporting the side-lining of the Minister of Defence, Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov.
In the West and North there were no changes.
Around Kharkiv there was some Russian movement towards Udy on the border with Russia. The town remains contested with competing claims regarding control.
There was no change in the situation in the Donbas.
Along the Zaporizhzhia front there were reportedly some minor advances by Ukraine. The nuclear power plant continued to be shelled with the IAEA yet to reach the facility despite assurances from both sides.
In the Kherson region Ukraine undertook offensive actions and reportedly captured several villages across three fronts. It is unclear if this is a broader counter-offensive or three separate local actions that achieved success and are being built upon. Russian air-defences are sufficiently degraded in the region that Ukrainian aviation is being used for close ground support. Russia is moving further resources to the region however the status of the three bridges across the Dnieper means additional forces will be largely confined to the left bank. Information in this theatre remains limited.
Partisan activity has increased substantially with a series of assassinations and attacks on collaborators in Luhansk, Melitopol and Kherson. A Russian unit was ambushed by partisans in Mariupol and active fighting was recorded inside Kherson City yesterday.
