Ukraine
Things appear to be escalating rapidly with anti-tank weapons being urgently flown into Ukraine from the UK and Russian troops & armour moving into Belarus.
Not a fun time to be in Kiev.
........or possibly Taipei.

I hope all the people predicting a war are wrong. But if they're right I put my money on Russia.

Indeed. It's a short journey from the Belarus border to Kiev.Fred Edwards wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 5:44 amI hope all the people predicting a war are wrong. But if they're right I put my money on Russia.

Putin wouldn't dare invade the US because the US has a top notch military and a willingness to use nuclear weapons if they started to lose a conventional war.
The US is playing the same game that not so Great Britain played in the years leading up to WWII. During the 30s the UK signed all sorts of treaties and made assurances to the Poles. The Poles were emboldened and foolishly took the English at their word and they made a number of provocations that galvanized the Germans and gave Hitler an excuse and the momentum to invade Poland. The same thing is happening happening now in the Ukraine. The US is willing to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian but American politicians know deep down that the Ukraine isn't worth risking WWIII over. At the end of the day it is a squabble among the Slavs and nobody will be able to persuade the American public as to why they must fight a costly and devastating war over a country that many would struggle to locate on a map.
Americans should have no involvement in Europe whatsoever seeing as how the Europeans stick their nose up at us and look at us with contempt. The US has gained nothing by being involved in the conflicts of that dreary and peninsular subcontinent. Europe is an overcrowded museum that has existed in a state of barbarism since the decline of the Roman Empire. Before the Americans arrived to keep the peace, it was an abattoir filled with violent and contentious paleskins who fought amongst themselves with a level of ferocity and savagery unknown to civilized humanity.

I'm not sure they do in general. It might just be you.

It's quite a conundrum as with his military adventures in Ukraine, the populace is steadily becoming anti-Russian and pro-European by default. Hence if he doesn't move militarily he's further from his goal of a Greater Rus.
The protests in Belarus against Lukashenko were a shot across the bow.

The Western provocations of Russia are unnecessary. Any hostile action taken against Russia only drives them closer to China. The West is a lot closer culturally to Russia than many other countries that we are trying to forcefully integrate into Western societies.
When people talk about Russian provocation they tend to forget the Western provocation. Aiming rockets at them, stationing military near them, overthrowing Viktor Yanukovych, just to name a few.
When Ukraine became independent the treaties signed said that Crimea belongs to Russia.
This is a big mess that directly contradicts the peaceful intentions of founding NATO. The West should shake hands with Russia and focus on combating China instead.
If Saudi Arabia can be an ally, why not Russia?

No doubt Beijing is watching events unfold with intense interest. A successful move by Russia into Ukraine, even a limited move, may embolden Beijing depending upon the response from Western powers. A move to grab the Taiwanese held Kinmen Islands may well result.
I don’t think China needs any emboldening and they certainly wouldn’t be influenced by any outcome of a foreign nations ambitions.Prahok wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:50 amNo doubt Beijing is watching events unfold with intense interest.
