London, United Kingdom – Refugees being detained in Britain who are scheduled to be deported to Rwanda have told Al Jazeera that they are on hunger strike as they struggle with severe mental health conditions, with one saying he has suicidal thoughts.
The United Kingdom announced a controversial plan to offshore asylum seekers to the African nation in April. The first deportation flight is set to take off on June 14.
Ahmed*, from Syria, said he fled the war-torn country after refusing to join the army and arrived in the UK without documents. He is due to be deported on the first flight.
“I escaped and came to the UK through the Balkan countries,” the 20-year-old, detained at the Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre near London Heathrow Airport, told Al Jazeera by phone.
“Unfortunately, on May 20, the Home Office notified me of the decision and gave me a ticket to Rwanda.”

Asylum seeker or economic migrant? Asylum shoopers choose the country that offers the best benefits not the first safe place. The gentleman obviously did not arrive in the UK directly from the Balkan countries and passed through democracies that while safe did not meet his liking.
He is not seeking safety, he is seeking benefits far above that. A man suffering from famine refusing a meal because he wants dessert and wine with it.
UK pensioners received a $20 increase per fortnight in these inflationary times and the UK's obligation is to them first.

Yep. I don't mind sharing my dessert but do not touch my wine.Anthony's Wiener wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 6:29 amAsylum seeker or economic migrant? Someone should tell the Syrian guy it's the straw that broke the camel’s back
Total BS that the Rwanda thing is purely for "non whites", and about time that there was a reasonable deterrent to crossing the channel

Ukrainians who illegally entered the UK and face deportation have the identical options as non whites. Return to their home country or Rwanda.Lazy feck og wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 8:44 amTotal BS that the Rwanda thing is purely for "non whites", and about time that there was a reasonable deterrent to crossing the channel
Denver 7 Colorado News: Undocumented Ukrainians in UK face possible deportation to Rwanda.

Photos of the 3 star hotel that they will be housed in are online. The hotel has both a pool and a gym.
Odd the original poster would need to erroneously bring race into the subject unless of course he / she knew that without the fabrication of racism there would be no outrage over the UK's new policy of offering the deportees an option to returning to their homeland.

I know several refugees. One is a young Syrian lad who got in trouble as a student protesting the regime. An arrest warrant was issued for him and he was forced to hide in a distant cousin’s cellar for close to a year. Had he been found he would have been executed. He eventually found a way out.
Another is a young gay Iranian man. Again, staying would have led to his death.
Another is a Syrian guy in his forties who fled with his 80 year old mother. Their father was a wealthy factory owner who was killed by the regime for refusing to hand over his assets to the Assad regime. They got out quickly.
Most refugees in the U.K. come from Syria, Iran or Iraq. They target the U.K. because they have friends or families here or know there are already communities.
Not one of the people I know is on benefits. Each have jobs and pay their own way, paying taxes. It’s true that they receive an allowance when they arrive because they are not allowed to work: that allowance is £40 a week.
The U.K. is nowhere near the favoured destination of refugees. It is way down the list. Germany, France, Italy etc receive and take far more refugees than the U.K. Germany takes around 4-5 times more.
Also, only 1 in 5 asylum applications are granted in the U.K. compare to, say, 4 in 5 in Sweden and similar figures in some EU countries.
To say they come from benefits is just wrong and perhaps people should do some research firm themselves instead of consistently falling in line to parrot the tedious bigoted tropes fueled by the tabloids.

The same thing happened after Idi Amin kicked out 60,000 Indians out of Uganda (there because of the British) who then went to settle in the UK, well 30,000 of them.
Tabloids went ballistic and stirred up hate.
The fact is these people were successful business owners who propped up the Ugandan economy. The UK benefited enormously.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
I'm quote sure that in parallel with us immigrants in Cambodia, they are there for the mosques and the culture - cinemas etc. I gather there is a film attracting particular interest at the moment.
Every single Muslim I’ve talked to think the issue is laughable and are not offended by the movie at all. They roll their eyes at the usual suspects in places like Bradford and point out that their attitudes have more to do with Kashmir hill village culture that is deeply rooted in century’s old attitudes and nothing to do with the image of Islam they want to project.
But, of course, it makes good copy for the Daily Mail and as such people assume it represents the entirety of Islam. It doesn’t. Far from it.

More than 3,000 people arrived in in March, compared with 831 last March. More than 4,850 have made the crossing so far this year. Last year, 28,526 people are known to have crossed in small boats - up from 8,404 in 2020. This year's figure is set to be much higher, according to Border Force union officials.Guest wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 11:37 amAnthony's Wiener wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 6:29 amAsylum seeker or economic migrant? 6x the number of last year, are you suggesting that Syria or Iraq is suddenly 6x more dangerous or Iran is hunting homosexuals with 6x the vigour?
There is a difference between an anecdote and a fact, sadly some are perhaps emotionally invested or wilfully blind to the difference.
I have pity for refugees and wish them well. Canada accepted 30,000 Syrian refugees and should be commended for it.
"Tedious bigoted tropes " may be your interpretation of my opinion just as opportunistic, sexual predator may be my interpretation of a befriender of young Iranian homosexual refugees. Neither interpretation changes the fact that the UK is offering failed asylum seekers an opportunity to go somewhere else than their home country at the UK's expense.
Looking at the statistics of who these channel crossers are, over 85% young and male, it would appear a poster thinks with his small head not his large one.
What an extraordinary comment, and one that reveals more about you than you probably intended.Anthony's Wiener wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 2:59 pm

The Rwanda policy is grotesque, and one loathed by decent-minded people, including moderate conservatives. We are literally shipping people to a country where tens of thousands were macheted to death for being the wrong tribe not so long ago.
If anyone thinks that is the way a civilised nation behaves, they need to take a good long look in the mirror.

The Rwandan genocide ended some 30 years ago. 64% of the Rwandan population is under 30 years old. Do you fear leaving your door when in Cambodia? Do you like sleepless at night fearing you will end up in the killing fields? Hypocrisy at it's finest.
Which nation do you consider
"civilized" as from my research every nation deports unsuccessful refugees. The United States has deported more than 5 million immigrants in the past 20 years. Germany has deported over 125,000 in the past 5 years. None were given the option of choosing a 3rd country instead of their homeland.
Whether moderate conservatives disagree with the policy does not influence my opinion any more than the Socialist Workers Party holding demonstrations against it. Some are happy to blindly follow the sheep in front of them, a warm nose and a constant view are their main priority. When I look in a mirror my friend, I see someone who has formed his own opinion not someone who's nose is brown and thoughts have been decided by which way the wind blows.
