Russian Civil War- New Thread
Hot Pink will be along soon to tell us that the collapse of the rouble is actually a genius strategy being orchestrated by Putin, a sign of his economic genius, and that the massive influx of tourists to Russia from . . . ummmm . . . Belarus that will come from it will provide the funds needed to kill off Ukraine for good.
Still no sign of Prigozhin as Kremlin discredits him, Biden suggests he watch the menu and Putin offers Wagner fighters opportunity to join Russian army.

Igor Girkin has been arrested.
For those unsure, Girkin was heavily involved in Donbass in 2014 and convicted by the ICC of shooting down MH17. He is a strident nationalist who regularly complained that the Kremlin wasn't sufficiently committed to the Russo-Ukrainian War. He formed an advocacy group called the "Angry Patriots" who pushed for full mobilisation in Russia and was a harsh critic of the performance of the Russian Army under Shoigu and Gerismov.

.....and Pavel Gubarev joins him (another of the original strongmen of 2014 whose wife, Ekatrina, was heavily involved in Donbass politics until dismissal for corruption late last year).
Reportedly 15 senior officers have been suspended/fired in the wake of rebellion including:
General Surovkin (once total theatre commander for the Russo-Ukraine War, head of Russia's Aerospace forces at the time of his disappearance - has ties with Prigozhin though publicly requested Wagner to stand-down on the night of the mutiny)
Major General Popov (commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army responsible for the defence of Western Zaporizhzhia, dismissed for criticising Shoigu & Gerasimov). Reportedly a very capable commander.
Colonel General Teplinsky is an interesting one. There are rumours he was to be detained however the 7th VDV reportedly stated they would withdraw from the Bakhmut theatre if this occurred. Teplinsky was removed earlier this year for being critical of the conduct of the war, but later reinstated. His subordinate, Major General Kornev was removed, prompting the reported response from the 7th VDV re: Teplinsky.
Major General Seliverstov (commander of the 106th VDV fighting in Bakhmut)
Major General Ibatullin (commander of the 90th Tank)
There is a purge of the Russian ranks that appears to have someway to go.
Meanwhile Prigozhin is setting up shop in Belarus, with Wagner reportedly beginning training of the Belarusian Army.

Social media reports (unconfirmed):

Russia has accused Ukraine of being behind a drone attack that damaged at least two buildings in the capital Moscow early on Monday morning.Nerd wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 12:10 pmSocial media reports (unconfirmed):

The Russian defence ministry said two drones were "suppressed and crashed", adding that there were no casualties.
Russia's state-owned Tass news agency reported that one drone fell close to the defence ministry.
Ukrainian officials are yet to comment, but they rarely claim responsibility for attacks inside Russia.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone strikes hit "non-residential" buildings around 04:00 local time (01:00 GMT). He added that the buildings had not sustained any major damage.
But state news agencies reported that some drone fragments were found just 2km (1.2 miles) away from the defence ministry's buildings.
"A Kyiv regime attempt to carry out a terrorist act using two drones on objects on the territory of the city of Moscow was stopped," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement posted to telegram.
The state run Tass news agency reported that drone debris was also found along the city's Komsomolsky Avenue. Moscow's transport department wrote on Telegram that traffic along the route was blocked and photos showed emergency services working at the scene.
Traffic was also stopped on Likhachev Avenue, where a high-rise office building was damaged. Footage published on the military Zvezda TV channel showed missing windows at the top of the building.
Moscow has accused Ukraine of a host of drone attacks on its territory in recent months.
Earlier this month, Russia said Ukraine launched a drone attack on Moscow, forcing flights to be diverted from Vnukovo International Airport. Ukraine did not claim responsibility.
And in May Kyiv denied carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin, which Russia said amounted to an attempt on President Vladimir Putin's life.
Monday's incident comes just a day after Russia targeted the Ukrainian port city of Odesa with fresh missile strikes, destroying the historical Transfiguration Cathedral.
Unesco, the UN's cultural agency, said it was "deeply dismayed and condemns in the strongest terms" the attack on the historic centre of Odesa.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed retaliation for the attack.
"They will definitely feel this," he said during his nightly address from Kyiv. "The target of all these missiles is not just cities, villages or people. Their target is humanity and the foundations of our entire European culture."

Bringing the news. You stay classy, nas, Cambodia.
A private plane on which Prigozhin was listed as a passenger has crashed in Russia. Ten on board. All presumed dead.
Wagner sources say it was shot down. A video of the plane falling out of the sky doesn’t contradict that.
Well, he survived 2 months. Not bad really.
Ho hum.
RIP to the other nine victims.

There are a number of armed Wagernites in Belarus suddenly wondering about their immediate future.
There were some initial reports from Russian media that Dmitry Utkin was with him as well.
I guess we'll found out soon enough if either were actually on the plane.

Far more likely time caught up with them than that Yevgeny Prigozhin et al faked their deaths in the hopes of gaining a little more time - they were on borrowed time.
I don’t understand his choices a couple of months ago. He can’t not have known what fate he’d sealed.

Lots of talk on Russian Telegram channels about a "second march on Moscow", however Wagner surrendered most of their heavy weaponry and demobilised the majority of their soldiers, so are unlikely to be able to do so alone.
Internet is reportedly down at the Wagner base in Belarus.

If you aim for the king you better not miss.
If he was that smart he'd have organised his own death.Aurelius wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 12:55 amA private plane on which Prigozhin was listed as a passenger has crashed in Russia. Ten on board. All presumed dead.

I wonder when he'll turn up in Cambodia

The interesting thing will be the fallout. How will Wagner react. We already have reports that mobile signals around their camps have been blocked, which suggests the Russians and Belarusians are wary of a response.
And how about the Russian Army. Wagner has done a lot of the heavy lifting in the war; will the Russian regular army have the will to carry on?
