Higher Wages for Teflers On the Horizon?
With many teachers flying home and the country's borders closed for the foreseeable, it stands to reason that when the schools reopen there will be an increased demand and probably severe lack of supply for native English teachers - like in the old days. Wages could theoretically see rises of between 20-50% - or higher.
Here's to all the Teflers on $25 an hour.

Some ex Teflers seem to not be very good at history. Teflers earned more in relative terms when the Cambodian economy was on its knees than they ever have done in recent times Why? Supply and demand.

As more and more schools here close, a lot not to reopen again, there will be a glut of TEFL-Jobbers looking for work, and fewer positions for them to chase.
There is a very good chance that salaries will in fact decrease in real terms.
That less permanent salaried positions will be available as hour-by-hour payments replace them.

Schools closed and going out of business. Millions of people thrown out of work worldwide. Many expats laid off and stuck in the county with no income. And you think this will lead to higher wages for a job that just about anyone can do? Dream on.

I agree, I think that well paid TELF's will be as rare as an American geography teacher.

There will be lots of the smaller schools closed that have minimal family connections that enabled them got them an education license. Since virtual all schools are pretty shit out here, it won't effect the quality of education. There will be enough cash around for the wealthy to educate their little ones.Playboy wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 9:08 amAs more and more schools here close, a lot not to reopen again, there will be a glut of TEFL-Jobbers looking for work, and fewer positions for them to chase.

The white native females would have mostly got out : possibly 95% of them.
The druggy misfits will still be around due to lack of cash to get home, and possibly nothing there when they get back. There are many male teachers who have settled down here: they won't have gone, although, some of them will.
Not sure in percentage terms how many the native force has been reduced by, but it must be fairly substantial.
Estimate?

You're not thinking about taking up teaching again?
But, yes, that's a negative.
But won't most them hold their money in banks abroad which they live off? You're not expecting the dollar to be be worth 10c of its former self are you?

The pandemic must have affected the quality of the weed you've been smoking, your ramblings make even less sense than usual.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 10:05 amYou're not thinking about taking up teaching again?

I know a few Filipinas who have been worried about losing their income due to school closures etc. They are good teachers and are not going anywhere.
I wonder what percentage of private schools and universities will be bankrupt, probably more than 50%
If you think most expats hold their money overseas and live off it, you’re mad. A high proportion of expats have zero savings and are living pretty much hand to mouth.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 10:05 amBut won't most them hold their money in banks abroad which they live off? Well, that's the image most of them like to portray on here, but I would have to agree with you.
There are a lot of teachers out here, hence the thread. But, of course, just because teachers hold the lion share of the expats, and this is an expat forum, 440 totally disregards them, and adhoms myself.
Lalala

Only a small proportion of expats are teflers. Don’t confuse the noise they make and the time they fuck up publicly and shamefully and so appear on 440 with numbers.
There aren’t that many on 440, let alone in the wider expat population.

"just because teachers hold the lion share of the expats,"
What made you come up with that assumption? Seems like you move in a very narrow social circle!
