Gyms that are still open or have just opened
Hi guys!
Still in Cambo and loving it. I think I will stay here for as long as I can.
I need to get back to the gym. Do you guys know any good gyms in the riverside area that are open?
I am not talking about the outdoor local type places that have no AC. I just am too much of a wuss to hack that. LOL
I was at the gym at the Himawari hotel today. It's nice but doesn't' have enough equipment for me. I need a squat cage or rack and dumbells up to al least 30 kg. Also quite expensive at 99 USD a month.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

If you think $99 per month is expensive then The Place is completely out of your league and the only one left remotely close to Riverside that meets the requirements is Monkifit.

Unfortunately, The Place is currently closed.

There's a 50 cent spot with no AC and weights all over the floor. I'm the only white person there. It's perfect.

Alexandra mentioned Monkifit, which is great, but it's expensive too. It's like $110+ month-to-month, but has everything you could want. The equipment is top notch and it's spotless. It's the only gym in Cambodia I've been to with a deadlift jack.
Unfortunately, any gym with AC is going to be around the price range you don't want (~$100 a month or more). I just got used to no AC. It sucks at first, but if you stay hydrated, it stops being a big deal.
For me, most Khmer gyms (~$1-$2 for a walk in) have at least 1 deal breaker: no squat rack, squat rack on a slant, not enough plates, etc.. There are a few exceptions if you look around, but I'm willing to lift someplace hot and south of mediocre in terms of cleanliness if they have enough plates and a squat rack. Your mileage may vary depending on what you want/can tolerate.

The place is not so expensive anymore. They were advertising $500 for a year recently.

It works out around $80/month if you pay for 3-6 months ahead.AwesomeBill wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 10:29 amAlexandra mentioned Monkifit, which is great, but it's expensive too. Their OCD cleaning can be irritating. Two teenage girls obnoxiously polishing everything all the time and I often find that they get too close to me. It’s a bit of a pain considering how much space there is and it’s usually empty when I go. I find it annoying when they’re polishing the floor next to me while I’m doing my thing and I wish they would find something else to clean.
It doesn’t have a pool but who cares. Equipment and space wise it’s the best gym I’ve ever visited, both in and out of Cambodia. I’m used to basement gyms with low ceiling and cigarette smoke coming through the ventilation but I spent many months both at The Place and Superfit. Monkifit is heaven on earth in comparison.
Thanks for the info.
100 bucks is not "out of my league". I spend about that every night I go out to the Riverside bars. It's just not worth it considering the lack of equipment there. I'd be perfectly happy to pay 100+ for a fully equipped gym with working AC that is walking distance from my hotel.
Palace and Monkfit look great (I especially like the girls on Monkfit's promotional material). But both are too far for me. I don't want to have to take a tuk tuk to go to the gym.
I will wait for Jouvence at Sorya to reopen (they sam they may soon). I shop a lot at Lucky and at the Central Market so this would be convenient. I remember working out there once and that it seemed to have decent equipment. I think they didn't have a squat rack but did have a smith machine which will be OK for a few weeks before I leave to go home.

Thanks for your replies guys.
I called all the places you suggested and they are all still shut. Even the grotty "locals only" place with the plates on the floor is closes (If its the place by Kendal market that Nacho is thinking about).
If anyone knows of any gym hat is open please let me know. Even a cheap local plates on the floor style one with no AC would be OK. I could just go in there to do 3 or 4 compound exercises and the rest of the iso stuff I can do at home with fitness bands.
Many thanks in advance!
