PC Knee Jerk Madness
Companies, Councils, Sports Teams and Individuals are becoming so scared of bad publicity generated by the 'oh I'm offended, offended, oh so very very offended' crowd, who seem to have more free time to spend on the Internet, protesting (and looting and burning) that they are falling over themselves to prove just how SuperWoke they are.
So along with Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh and The League of Gentlemen, one of the funniest episodes of Fawlty Towers has now been targeted.
If we can no longer make fun of Ze Germans, what is next, making it illegal to mock Le Froggies ?? ('Allo 'Allo will be next for the chop, Mark my words )
"An episode of Fawlty Towers famous for coining the phrase, “Don’t mention the war!” has become the latest “classic” British television programme to be taken down from a BBC-owned streaming service, as broadcasters continue to conduct a reappraisal of old British television content."

Joyless fuckers, won't be happy till we're all as miserable as they are.

I'm totally against taking down these programmes.
My point though is that in today's culture war, everything is kneejerk and predictable. You can almost script the two arguments from both sides. And on a forum like 440 where many of us know each other, you know exactly who is going to engage in the debate, and in what way.
I include myself in that. And you.

In relation to the OP it is now being reported that the situation is not as PB suggests. In 2013 the specific episode of Fawlty Towers was edited by the BBC and with full support of John Cleese because it has repeated use of the word nagger.
Both Netflix and UKTV had the UNEDITED version of the War episode on. It is this unedited version that has been removed, solely because of the nagger word.
Both have said they will replace that version with the 2013 edition.
Once again it brings to mind my favourite theory - things are never as simple and black and white as appears at first glance.

Can we still listen to this?

Okay, so they pulled it because they were scared of offending blacks, not Germans ... 45 years after it was made.scobienz wrote: ↑Fri Jun 12, 2020 6:27 pmIn relation to the OP it is now being reported that the situation is not as PB suggests. It's a crazy world.
I wonder when the woke left will storm up to the city of Bath and tear down the Roman statues for the subjugation and genocide against the Celtic peoples by Italian descendants.....

I guess they are playing catch up to follow the same principles regarding racial slurs as certain websites . It’s good to see 440 leading the way on important social issues.
