thank you. I have nothing to contribute to discussion but it's definitely something I want to avoid, having seen the pain others have been in from kidney stones.

I would just add that most "added Vitamin C" on drinks or any foodstuff generally isn't Vitamin C at all, it is mass produced ascorbic acid as you mention in your article. This is broken down completely differently in the body from naturally occurring vitamin C found in fruit. Again you have this as one of your points, but I think that it is one of the biggest issues today that so many folks are forgetting to get natural vitamins & don't realised that additives don't give anything like the benefits of pure simple good food.
The water side is also crucial - living in a tropical climate I still hear folks saying they drink x litres per day which is the RDA. Maybe it is the RDA in the UK or USA, etc. but the best check is simply the colour of your urine, not how much you're drinking. If your urine is still yellow/orange, you need to drink more water. A lot more. I suggest fresh coconuts or sparkling water for those who really struggling with just drinking boring old water.
Good contribution anyway doc, thanks.

"Mass produced ascorbic acid" is another way of saying vitamin C. Synthetic and natural occurring vitamin C are the same thing chemically and cells use them in the same way.Spigzy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 2:52 pmI would just add that most "added Vitamin C" on drinks or any foodstuff generally isn't Vitamin C at all, it is mass produced ascorbic acid as you mention in your article. It is obviously better to get vitamin C from fruits than from processed foods because fruits contain other vitamins and minerals, bioflavonoids, and fiber. Fruits don't contain additives.

"In some cases, our level of misunderstanding goes even further. Not only do we think of vitamin C also operating on its own, we have been taught to think of vitamin C as synonymous with ascorbic acid. It turns out that both of these are incorrect. First, vitamin C does not operate alone. It requires co-factors to function and prevent its degradation. Best known of these is vitamin P (using the older name), which are a group of water-soluble polyphenols known as flavonoids (the modern name). These important compounds are found in varying degrees in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Second, ascorbic acid is not the entirety of vitamin C, rather it can be described as the “antioxidant wrapper” that co-occurs with the other parts of vitamin C: flavonoids, rutin, the enzyme tyrosinase, and several other factors that benefit blood vessel strength and the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells. It is best not to think of vitamins as a “thing”, but rather an “activity”, which requires the interaction of many items to function. The ascorbic acid that is added to processed food is just the ascorbic acid—it is devoid of all of the co-occurring factors of vitamin C. By the way, synthetic ascorbic acid is manufactured through a five-step process from glucose, using either acetone or a genetically modified microbe as part of the process."
Best description I can find on the internet service without digging into research papers & paywalls.

"Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid and ascorbate, is a vitamin found in various foods and sold as a dietary supplement.

The paragraph you quoted is written ambiguously.
By the way, when healthy people supplement with pure vitamin C, their vitamin C blood levels increase for a couple of hours. Although vitamin C is water soluble and rapidly excreted.

I don't know what the author means by "to function" but it takes more than a year for pure vitamin C powder to degrade when it is stored properly (in a sealed container, in a cool and dry place.)It requires co-factors to function and prevent its degradation.
What does the "entirety" of vitamin C mean? Ascorbic acid is a form of vitamin C, the purest form of it in fact. Flavonoids, rutin (a flavonoid), tyrosinase, etc are not "parts" of vitamin C. They are cofactors of vitamin C.Second, ascorbic acid is not the entirety of vitamin C, rather it can be described as the “antioxidant wrapper” that co-occurs with the other parts of vitamin C: flavonoids, rutin, the enzyme tyrosinase, and several other factors that benefit blood vessel strength and the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells.

A vitamin is an 'organic molecule or a set of organic molecules' I don't know what the author means by "requires the interaction of many items to function." Vitamin C is vitamin C whether it is in a plastic bag, a metal container, whether it shot into space or buried deep into the earth. It is best not to think of vitamins as a “thing”, but rather an “activity”, which requires the interaction of many items to function.”
This is what I've been trying to say. Ascorbic acid is ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C. Pure vitamin C does not need other cofactors for it to be efficacious. Pure vitamin C can cure scurvy. Scurvy is a disease that is caused by a lack of vitamin C, not by a lack of vitamin C andflavonoids. The ascorbic acid that is added to processed food is just the ascorbic acid—it is devoid of all of the co-occurring factors of vitamin C.
Well, I’m glad that’s all cleared up.

You wouldn't have had the kidney stones to clear up in the first place if you had followed my advice!! #science
You should ignore Harold, he's clearly a big-pharma stooge trying to sell vitamin-c pills rather than a conspiracy theorist, he'll be telling you 5G is harmless next!! #HopingSarcasmIsDetected

I think it is safe for most healthy people to supplement up to a gram of C a day. If someone has a history of kidney stones or relatives who have had kidney stones then they should avoid vitamin C. Processed foods rarely have more than 20 or 30mg of vitamin C added to them, which is a perfectly safe amount even for people who do suffer from kidney stones.
From the Wikipedia article,
From the Wikipedia article,
Although the benefits of vitamin C supplementation probably don't justify the risks of kidney stone formation, the cost of the vitamin C supplement, and mostly just the hassle of taking vitamin C everyday,There is a longstanding belief among the mainstream medical community that vitamin C increases risk of kidney stones.[57] "Reports of kidney stone formation associated with excess ascorbic acid intake are limited to individuals with renal disease".[4] Reviews state that "data from epidemiological studies do not support an association between excess ascorbic acid intake and kidney stone formation in apparently healthy individuals",[4][58] although one large, multi-year trial did report a nearly two-fold increase in kidney stones in men who regularly consumed a vitamin C supplement.[59]
